Environmental Compliance Inspector I/II

Are you passionate about environmental protection and public service? Union Sanitary District is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Environmental Compliance Inspector I/II to help protect water quality and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in the field and the lab, collecting wastewater samples, inspecting industrial and commercial facilities, and supporting pollution prevention programs. Your work will directly support cleaner waterways and healthier communities. We are recruiting for one EC Inspector at either the I or II level, depending on experience.

Position Overview

Environmental Compliance Inspectors I/II perform inspections, investigations, and sampling of wastewater and stormwater discharges to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local pretreatment and pollution prevention regulations.

• Inspector I is the entry-level in this career series, gaining foundational knowledge and experience.
• Inspector II performs more independent inspections and analyses of moderately complex facilities and discharges.

Depending on the level, your tasks will include collecting samples, inspecting businesses for compliance, responding to callouts, investigating waste discharges, and working closely with customers. Qualifications

About You

Education:

• Two years of college with coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field
  OR
• High school with at least one year of equivalent experience in wastewater treatment, environmental inspection, or laboratory analysis

Experience:

• Inspector I: Entry-level; two years relevant coursework required
• Inspector II: One year of experience in environmental compliance, wastewater operations, or laboratory work

Licenses/Certifications:

• Valid California Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record and insurable by the District
• EC Inspector II must obtain a CWEA Grade I Industrial Waste Inspector Certificate within 24 months of appointment

Physical Requirements:

You must be physically capable of performing critical duties, including climbing ladders and lifting 50 pounds. A willingness to work under adverse weather conditions, complete overtime as required and use respiratory protection equipment is essential.

Candidates for the Environmental Compliance Inspector I/II position who meet minimum qualifications will be invited to an Online Written Exam scheduled for Thursday - Friday, 5/8/2025 - 5/9/2025.

Applications of the highest scoring candidates will be reviewed by a panel of Subject Matter Experts. Top candidates will be invited to a Virtual Qualifications Appraisal Interview scheduled for Tuesday, 5/20/2025.

Finalist Interviews are scheduled for the week of 5/26/2025 or 6/2/2025, in person at the District.

Before being appointed to the position, the candidate must pass a criminal background check including reference checks, Live Scan, DMV clearance, and pre-employment physical.
