Department of Transportation is responsible for funding, designing, building, operating, and maintaining the County Road System. El Dorado County's Road System currently consists of approximately 1083 centerline miles of paved roadway, 76 bridges, a multitude of storm drainage systems, and related transportation facilities.
The Department of Transportation has two main priorities: 1. Ensuring that our roads are safe for public use with due care in a manner in which it is reasonably foreseeable that they will be used, and
2. Preserving and maintaining the public's multi-billion dollar investment in our roads, bridges, and other facilities.
MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS DIVISION The Maintenance and Operations Division is composed of Road Crews, Fleet Services, Equipment Mechanics, and Traffic Control Crews. This dedicated team manages the repair, maintenance, and replacement of existing County roadway and drainage infrastructure. It is also responsible for the maintenance of all 1083 centerline miles of roadway in the County.
THE OPPORTUNITY Under general supervision, performs routine and skilled work in the repair and construction of bridges, box culverts, guard rails, retaining walls and related structures; operates hydraulic cranes, backhoes and related construction equipment.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to: - Perform carpentry work in the construction and repair of bridges, box culverts, guard rails, retaining walls and/or related structures; performs construction of various wooden structures such as storage sheds, utility buildings and/or other structures.
- Perform rough and finish concrete work; constructs wooden forms, form panels and bracing for various concrete structures; mixes, pours and finishes concrete.
- Maintain and repairs steel bridges by erecting and securing steel girders, stringers, guard rails and/or other components.
- Operate construction equipment such as hydraulic cranes, backhoes, dump trucks, flat beds, forklifts, and other vehicles; operates various hand and power tools associated with the construction and maintenance of bridges and related work.
- Perform general safety checks on equipment including fueling and checking the oil, water, lights and/or other appropriate vehicle component systems.
- Perform form stripping, painting and clean-up duties on bridges and related structures.
- May provide lead direction for a small crew.
- Perform snow removal, ice control and storm patrol duties as assigned.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The Department of Transportation is looking for an individual that has demonstrated skill in operating and maintaining road vehicles and equipment such as trucks, rollers and loaders. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power, and shop tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair and construction of roads and have experience related to safe work practices and safety regulations pertaining to the operations and transportation of the equipment and work construction zones. The incumbent will possess a positive attitude and enjoy completing projects with the maintenance team while working independently without close supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience Requirements (typing "See Resume" in application will not be accepted)
Bridge Maintenance Worker I : six months of experience as a laborer in construction or maintenance work.
Bridge Maintenance Worker II : in addition to the above, one year of experience in bridge maintenance and construction work at a level equivalent to the County's class of Bridge Maintenance Worker I.
Bridge Maintenance Worker III : one year of experience in bridge maintenance and construction work at a level equivalent to the County's class of Bridge Maintenance Worker II
AND passage of the performance examination for this classification.
NOTE: The above qualifications are typically accepted ways of obtaining the required knowledge and skills.
Other Requirements: Must regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to sixty (60) pounds. Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions, work overtime or off-hour shifts in emergency situations and work with exposure to traffic.
Bridge Maintenance Worker I must possess a valid driver's license.
Bridge Maintenance Worker II must possess a valid commercial Class B driver's license with no restrictions as to transmission and air brakes, and must acquire a Tanker Endorsement within six months of hire or promotion date.
Bridge Maintenance Worker III must possess a valid commercial Class A driver's license with a Tanker Endorsement and no restrictions as to transmission and air brakes.
Knowledge of: - Techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of bridges, drainage systems and other related structures.
- Operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in bridge repair and construction, including hydraulic cranes and backhoes.
- Operation and repair of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to the field.
- Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
- Basic shop arithmetic.
Skill in: - Operating trucks and equipment such as hydraulic cranes and backhoes used in the repair and construction of bridges and related structures.
- Operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in the work.
- Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
- Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
- Keeping accurate records and preparing basic reports.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
