    Job Summary

    Performs a wide variety of unskilled or semi-skilled tasks as part of the City’s Employment Training Program (CETP). The goal of this program is to provide work opportunities within the City of Santa Monica so that program participants can acquire skills that will prepare them for future employment in the skilled trades.

    Receives direct supervision from a supervisor or manager and/or designee who makes detailed work assignments, carefully reviews work in progress and upon completion.

    Representative Duties

    Participates in a structured job training program designed to provide the skills, knowledge, abilities and/or work experience required to obtain regular employment in the skilled trades.

    Performs general maintenance tasks.

    Issues, checks-in and/or checks-out general maintenance materials, supplies, and equipment.

    Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.

    Performs other related duties, as assigned.

    Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public

    Work with persons from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds as well as a variety of work styles, personalities and approaches

    Skill in:

    Reading, writing, and communicating in English at an appropriate level

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Must be at least 18 years of age by the application filing closing date. Must be a current resident of the City of Santa Monica or have attended public school in Santa Monica. Priority will be given to those populations who have overcome previous hardships such as school drop-out, prior gang involvement, prior drug or alcohol abuse, etc. Candidates must be enrolled in school, either in a GED program, adult education, vocational school, high school, or college during the entire course of employment.

    Licenses and Certificates:

    Possession of a class C driver license.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    The work is generally performed outside in seasonal weather conditions. Work may be performed on slippery surfaces or near various equipment. Cramped positions, vibrations, noise, dust, dirt, soil, oils, and odors are regularly encountered. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Physical demands may include bending, reaching and standing. Participants in the City’s Employment Training (CETP) program will be required to attend a weekly, three hour class sponsored by the Housing and Human Services Division which provides job search, retention skills and educational assistance. Participants will also meet on a weekly basis with the CETP Coordinator to develop an individualized case plan and monitor progress towards vocational, educational, and independent living skills goals.
