    Essential Job Functions

    A Welder is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions:
    • Fabricates, installs and repairs jigs and fixtures, equipment, machinery, steel and iron structures and parts requiring the forging or welding of metal from drawings, sketches, or oral instructions.
    • Fabricates parts for, makes alterations to, and repairs various kinds of construction equipment in the shop and field.
    • Facehardens construction equipment parts such as bulldozer blades, dipper teeth, track grousers, and bucket edges.
    • Forges, repairs, tempers, and sharpens various kinds of hand tools and power tool parts.
    • Fabricates and repairs various metal objects such as water tanks, playground equipment, guard and hand rails, ladders, and steel and iron structures.
    • Occasionally installs or repairs water, air, steam, gas or drain lines and appurtenances.
    • Performs rigging work to move or install equipment and machinery as needed.
    • Makes work estimates and orders supplies as needed.
    • Maintains work records.
    • Directs the work of assigned helpers.
    • Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.


    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
    Four years' experience doing blacksmithing and electric and gas welding, one year of which must have been at the journey-level*.

    Vision : Normal color perception.

    LICENSE
    A valid California Class C Driver License is needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    Certification by the Department of Building and Safety of the City of Los Angeles to do structural welding and certification by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for boiler and pressure vessel welding may be required.

    PHYSICAL CLASS
    Physical Class IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
    *Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full range and diversity of work independently and reliably. Positions at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.

    In order to receive credit for the required license, you must include a legible copy of the license at the time of filing or within five (5) business days from the date of filing application. If you are unable to attach the required documents, p lease submit documentation to PWexams@dpw.lacounty.gov and indicate your name, the exam name and exam number.

    If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran’s credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to the exam analyst at PWexams@dpw.lacounty.gov within 5 (five) business days from the date of filing application

    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    The examination will consist of two (2) parts:

    PART I: A multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted at 60%, assessing:
    • Mechanical Comprehension
    • Safety Orientation
    • Achievement
    • Teamwork
    • Responsibility
    MULTIPLE CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    PART II: This assessment type will evaluate the training, experience, and education you list on a questionnaire and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system.
    An evaluation of Training and Experience (T&E), weighted at 40%, assessing:
    • Professional/Technical Knowledge of:
      • Welding
      • Equipment Usage Processes and Procedures
      • Hazardous materials/chemicals Storage Processes and Procedures

    Applicants must meet the Selection Requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the combined scores for Part I and II in order to be placed on the eligible list.

    TEST PREPARATION:

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
