About the Role: Metal Fabricators are responsible for repairs on refuse trailers, equipment modifications, reskinning buckets, and all fabrication within the Solid Waste Division. Facility modifications related to the safety of equipment and employees are performed within the Metal Fabricator group.
About the Team:The primary mission of this workgroup is to provide welding and metal fabrication. The workgroup is involved in eliminating fall hazards at our compactor and top load transfer stations to keep the public and employees safe on King County property.

Enjoy training, comprehensive benefits, and growth opportunities.Job Duties What You Will Be Doing: - Design, lay out, assemble and weld complex structural additions, repairs and specialized modifications to road and building structures, including bridge expansion joint systems.
- Set up and operate a variety of metal fabricating equipment.
- Design special jigs and fixtures.
- Interpret blueprints, sketches and other instructions.
- Fabricate specialized shop tools and equipment.
- Perform disassembly and assembly of equipment for access to weld areas.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills What You Bring: - 5 years of experience as a journeyman welder.
- Completion of a two-year community college/vocational technical school welding course or the equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to welding and fabrication.
- Skill in setup and operation of welding machines.

It Would Be Great if You Also Bring:- Journey-level skills in MIG, TIG, SMAW, Welding, Carbon arc and oxy-acetylene cutting
- Knowledge of standard metal shapes and designations
- Basic knowledge of heavy equipment related to hard surfacing and various repairs, including buckets, bowls, gates, booms and trucks
- Skill in working from blueprints, sketches and oral and written directions to lay out and cut metals
- Skill in manual welding in all physical positions i.e., kneeling, bending and overhead.
Supplemental InformationWorking Conditions:- Work Location: SWD Renton Shop located at 201 SW 34th Street, Renton WA .
- Work Schedule: This position works a 40-hour workweek. Schedules are dayshift, swing shift, Monday-Friday 6:00 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. or 4/10 Wed.-Sat or Sun-Wed. 6:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m., or Monday -Friday 2:30 - 11 p.m. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible with Supervisor approval.
- Union Representation : This position is represented by Joint Crafts Council, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers Lodge 104.
- Physical Requirement: The position requires physical labor including, but not limited to, standing, balancing, bending neck, kneeling, squatting, reaching, pushing and pulling. The ability to lift, carry, move, or handle up to 50 pounds. The candidate must have the ability to work including, but not limited to, inside/outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, inclement weather while on uneven slopes, surfaces, grades and terrain and other adverse conditions such as fumes, toxic chemicals, odor, noise, dust and moving machinery.
