    Main Purpose/Focus of the Position: The Occupational Data Supervisor leads Missouri’s Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) team, a program administered by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). OEWS collects data related to the number of workers and wage ranges by occupation in the state. The team is responsible for reaching out to Missouri employers that have been sampled to gather their data via a variety of data collection methods. This position has the opportunity to lead the work of the unit and ensure high quality, complete data, along with excellent customer service, to support decision-making in Missouri.

    • • Lead the OEWS unit, ensuring high quality data collection and reporting that meets the required performance deliverables of the program under the guidelines and requirements put forth by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in the Cooperative Agreement with the State of Missouri.
    • • Successfully supervise a team with collaborative and supportive leadership that upholds the values of the Department, with responsibilities including hiring, assisting workload, performance management, coaching, goal-setting, and day-to-day supervision.
    • Collect detailed occupational employment and wage information for Missouri employers through the phone, email, and other collection methods.
    • Analyze job classification information by understanding and utilizing the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system and industry classification information by using the North American Classification System (NAICS) received from the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.
    • Maintain working knowledge of staffing patterns, occupational differences, and occupational coding systems, as well as industry classifications, in order to solicit and properly code survey responses.
    • Conduct review of data estimates and collaborate on the accuracy and publication of the resulting data.
    • Effectively use a variety of programs such as Excel, Word, proprietary program software, and SQL-based queries to ensure effective program performance.
    • Perform other related work as assigned.
    • Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.


    • Beneficial education and/or work-related experience includes technical or professional experience in research, data analysis, economics, business, public administration, or closely related area, including military service.

      Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

      • Knowledge of statistical methods, data collection and dissemination, sample surveys, and quantitative analytical methods.

      • Ability to use dashboards and reporting tools to measure and guide performance.

      • Knowledge of economic, education, and labor market information data sets, sources and uses.

      • Ability to coach and support employees to create a positive work environment that encourages innovation and collaboration and recognizes achievement.

      • Ability to set strategy and adapt as program needs evolve.
