    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

    This position is in a very remote and rugged portion of the Chihuahuan Desert with extreme heat in the summer. Amenities are limited and cell signals are not always reliable. It is highly recommended that applicants review, research, and visit the area before applying The Big Bend region is also a gorgeous part of Texas with some of the best outdoor recreational opportunities in the entire state. The area also features very mild to warm winters and is one of the most bio-diverse regions in Texas.

    Under the direction of the Lead Maintenance Specialist, this position performs highly complex (senior-level) construction, restoration, renovation, and maintenance work. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment including road graders, front end loaders, bulldozers, and dump trucks, etc. in support of park operations. Provides training to coworkers on the safe and proper operation and maintenance of heavy equipment. Performs all phases of park maintenance including facility, vehicle, and equipment repairs. Duties include but are not limited to preventative maintenance (cleaning/inspecting) and repairs to facilities, buildings, equipment, vehicles, and grounds. Assists in the purchasing process to identify materials, supplies, and costs for park maintenance activities. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Graduation from High School or GED.

    Experience :

    Four years facility, equipment, or grounds maintenance experience.

    Licensure :

    Must possess a valid State driver's license.

    Must possess a valid class "A" Texas Commercial driver's license or must be able to obtain, within 12 months of employment a class "A" Commercial driver's license.

    NOTE : Retention of position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required licenses and compliance with State and Federal regulations including the Department of Transportation (DOT) required drug and alcohol testing.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Experience :

    Experience working with the public.

    Two years experience in heavy equipment operations and maintenance.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

    Knowledge of general maintenance techniques and minor repairs of facilities and equipment.

    Knowledge of operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, vehicles, tractors, diesel equipment, and various types of small engine/power equipment.

    Knowledge of general grounds and landscaping techniques.

    Knowledge of park operations and maintenance practices.

    Knowledge of the construction, repair, maintenance, and operation of buildings, equipment, and utility systems.

    Knowledge of building materials.

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in compiling information and completing reports.

    Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.

    Skill in performing construction repairs to include plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, and electrical.

    Skill in use of hand power tools, mowers, tractors, 4-wheel drive vehicles, loaders, graders, and other mechanized equipment.

    Skill in all phases of construction.

    Skill in preparing materials lists for take offs on projects.

    Skill in making independent, sound, and timely decisions.

    Skill in equipment and electronic maintenance.

    Skill in selecting appropriate tools and equipment.

    Skill in troubleshooting situations to determine appropriate actions to resolve problems.

    Ability to work independently with moderate supervision.

    Ability to work as a member of a team.

    Ability to assist with enforcing park rules and regulations.

    Ability to organize preventive maintenance programs.

    Ability to apply proper methods, techniques, and procedures in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.

    Ability to interpret drawings, diagrams, and blueprints.

    Ability to serve as a lead worker providing direction to others.

    Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with the employee safety program.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Required to live on-site in State housing with a monthly deduction. Housing rate is established by TPWD policy, calculated using federal guidelines, and may change according to market value.

    Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use.

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and with days off other than Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

    Required to pass drug screening prior to employment.

    Required to pass a previous employment drug testing history verification for all CDL positions held within the past two years.

    Subject to random, post-accident and reasonable cause testing for the duration of employment.

    Required to respond to emergencies and on-call situations including search and rescue events.

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

    Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Required to operate a State vehicle.

    Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.

    Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures.

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
