ABOUT THE DEPARTMENTThe San Rafael Fire Department is an all-risk fire agency that includesAdvanced Life Support (ALS) response, ambulance transport, technical rescue, hazardous material response, disaster response, fire prevention, and community preparedness. THE POSITIONAs a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist, you will play a vital role in reducing wildfire risks and enhancing community safety. Working under the guidance of the Wildfire Program Manager and Deputy Director of Emergency Management, you will assist in implementing key plans like the San Rafael Wildfire Prevention and Protection Action Plan and the Community Wildfire Protection Plan. In this position, you'll help enforce safety codes, develop mitigation strategies, evaluate properties, and engage with the community to raise awareness about wildfire prevention. IDEAL CANDIDATEWe are seeking motivated and compassionate Wildfire Mitigation Specialists to join our San Rafael Fire Team. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of wildfire behavior and risk mitigation strategies, combined with a strong ability to problem-solve and manage projects effectively. this role requires someone who is both technically proficient and emotionally intelligent. they should enjoy working outside in various conditions and also be comfortable and proficient in an office environment using various technology, including GIS, tablet applications, and Microsoft Suite. They are a clear communicator to help residents, businesses, and neighborhoods navigate change, address concerns, and foster collaboration in the face of wildfire risks.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent teamwork skills, working seamlessly with partners, community leaders, and stakeholders to develop and implement small-and large-scale comprehensive mitigation tactics. they will be adept at adjusting strategies based on evolving wildfire conditions, research, and laws and will take a proactive, solutions-focused approach to challenges.

- Interpret and enforce provisions of City Ordinances, State codes and other regulations.
- Analyze structure and vegetation ignition potential using a science-based approach.
- Investigate and evaluate public and referred agency complaints and concerns to satisfactory resolutions.
- Develop and implement fuel modification plans and strategies on small (I & II) and large (II & III) parcels to reduce wildfire ignition and impact risks.
- Complete individual property evaluations, including effective resident communication, photographic documentation, and report writing.
- Prepare written staff reports and present evidence at hearings, Council meetings, and/or Courts of law related to current code enforcement proceedings.
- Maintain clear and detailed records, program statistics, photos, and documents.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - Graduationfrom an accredited high school or equivalent (GED)
- The ability to read, write, and speak Spanish is preferred

OTHER REQUIREMENTS - Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
