    **Promotional Opportunity**

    **This is an internal recruitment available to currently qualified City of Reno Fire Department line Firefighters only.**

    Position Summary:
    Operate all fire apparatus and equipment; respond to fires, medical emergencies, and other emergency and non-emergency situations and take appropriate action; perform various staff support assignments in addition to normal emergency response activities.

    Examples of Essential Functions

    • Drive emergency apparatus and other emergency vehicles used in the transport of equipment and personnel in response to fire, rescue, emergency medical, hazardous material and other public service alarms.
    • Respond to fires and other emergency or public assistance incidents in a timely, safe, and skilled manner and participate in the control through hose laying, ladder operation, ventilation, extinguishment, extrication, salvage, and other activities as part of a team effort.
    • Operate pumps and other fire apparatus ensuring that water flows in sufficient quantity and pressure for application at the scene of fires and hazardous material incidents.
    • Ensure apparatus and assigned equipment are response-ready.
    • Inspect, clean, and maintain firefighting equipment and apparatus and is responsible for hose and other equipment being replaced on fire apparatus after being cleaned.
    • Report malfunctioning apparatus and other equipment to a maintenance mechanic and supervisor.
    • Maintain inventory and maintenance records of apparatus and equipment and conduct regular inspections to ensure the availability of adequate supplies and proper condition of fire suppression and emergency medical items; test and maintain firefighting and emergency medical equipment, preserving proper condition and suitability for service.
    • Prepare and maintain records, maps, files, and reports.
    • Administer basic and/or intermediate life support and first aid as needed; rescue those in need of aid.
    • Ensure that assigned personnel perform duties and responsibilities in a safe and prudent manner that does not expose them or others to unnecessary harm or risk of on-the-job injury.
    • Supervise activities at the scene of an emergency in the absence of a supervisor.
    • Assist with maintaining the fire station in a clean and orderly condition.
    • Inspect buildings, check fire escapes, exists, electric wiring and connections, and other possible fire hazards to determine compliance with pre-prevention codes and ordinances.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Minimum qualifications must be met by the applicant by the date of examination (April 28, 2025).

    Education:
    • High school diploma or the equivalent.

    Experience:
    • Five (5) cumulative years of experience as a line firefighter employed by the City of Reno.

    License:
    • Valid Nevada Non-Commercial Class B Driver's License with an "F" endorsement - or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license.
    A copy of your driver’s license must be attached to this application or provided to the Office of the Civil Service Commission (5th floor Reno City Hall) no later than at the time of examination. Candidates who have not submitted this required documentation prior to the examination time will be required to show proof before being admitted to the examination. No post marks will be accepted.

    Application Preparation:
    Applicants should prepare their application completely in a professional manner. Applications must show a clear and progressive work history with correct employment dates and a brief description of the tasks performed.
    Examination Process:
    Examination dates are for planning purposes and may change at the discretion of Civil Service or Reno Fire Department. This promotional testing process will require candidates to appear in person to participate.

    Written Examination:
    • Date: April 28, 2025
      • Timed Field Hydraulic Math - 30% of the written examination
      • Theoretical Math and Multiple Choice - 70% of the written examination
    • Weight = 40% of final grade
    Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Timed Field Hydraulic Math section to progress to the next stage of the testing process which includes the Theoretical Math and Multiple-Choice sections.

    The 30 highest-scoring candidates resulting from and passing the written examination will progress to the Practical Examination. Tied scores resulting in more than one candidate ranking in the 30th position will be re-ranked according to department seniority.

    Written Examination Study Materials:
    All study materials can be located under the FEO folder located on the RFD BLI, labeled “2025 FEO Study Materials".

    Practical Examination:
    • Date - Week of May 5th
    • Weight = 60% of final grade
    Candidates must pass each of the practical exercises to obtain a passing final grade for the entire examination process and be eligible for promotion.

    Candidates should prepare for the practical examination by studying the materials referenced for the written test and be ready to demonstrate proficiency on any apparatus/equipment that may be used for the examination.

    *An optional candidate orientation will be provided to all candidates on April 22nd at 9 a.m.

    Notification:
    Qualified City of Reno line Firefighter applicants will be notified by email of the exact date, time, and location of the examination (if applicable). Applicants are notified by email of their examination results. Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications will also be notified.

    Testing Accommodation:

    Contact and Demographic Information:
    Applicants are responsible for keeping the Reno Civil Service Commission informed of all contact phone, email and mailing changes. Rule XV, Section 2.

    Employee/Veteran Preference (In the Event of Tie Scores):
    On promotional examinations, in the event of tie scores resulting from final rating, including seniority points, an employee will be awarded veteran's preference and provided a rank preference if one (1) of the eligibles has submitted proof of honorable discharge from the military service. In the case where two (2) or more of the eligibles who have received the same score and have been awarded veteran's preference, the ranking shall be determined by a random assignment by computer. A candidate who desires to claim veteran's preference must, at the time of application, submit documentation of honorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces. This preference will only be administered in the event of tie scores. Documentation must be submitted at the time of application.

    Seniority Points to be Applied to the Final Score:
    Reno Fire Department uniformed employees shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:

    For each full year of continuous (cumulative if separation was for layoff) service completed after current minimum qualifications eligibility, up to a maximum of fifteen years...0.2 points per year.

    Fire Equipment Operator seniority point calculation begins at the fifth year once eligibility for meeting the 5 year minimum requirement has been achieved. Seniority points are not calculated from the year of hire and are only calculated for an entire year of employment, not portions or fractions of a year.

    Appointment and Certification:
    Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The current certification rule in effect at the time a request is received by the Civil Service Commission will be used to refer names. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.

    Certification from a promotional list is as follows: if the list contains fifteen (15) names or less, the ten (10) highest scoring eligibles; if the list contains more than fifteen (15) names, the eleven (11) highest scoring available eligibles; if the list contains fewer than ten (10) eligibles, all eligible names shall be submitted. If there is more than one vacancy, one (1) additional name shall be submitted for each vacancy.

    Probationary Period:
    As the final step in the selection process, newly promoted employees serve a probationary period of fixed duration to show their ability to perform the work.
