Manager - Athens - Clarke County Unified Government, GA

Known as “The Classic City,” Athens is located about 70 miles east of Atlanta, nestled in the rolling, wooded foothills of the Appalachians in the historic heartland of Georgia. The area is easily accessible by car through the I-85 corridor 25 miles north via US 441 or 50 miles west via US 316/78/29. Commercial air service is available at the nearby Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL). Athens-Clarke County is the smallest County in Georgia by land area comprising 122 square miles with roughly 130,000 residents calling it home, including approximately 42,000 University of Georgia.

Following its unification in 1991, ACCGov is governed by a 10-member Commission, each representing a geographical district. The organization operates under a recognized Commission-Manager form of government by the International City-County Management Association (ICMA), with the Manager’s authorities specified in the Athens-Clarke County Charter.

The Manager is appointed by the Mayor and Commission and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the unified organization, including the implementation of all policies, programs, contracts, ordinances, and resolutions as approved and directed by the governing body including applicable federal and state laws within accepted professional standards. The position promotes the development of a flexible and anticipatory organization that provides cost-effective and customer-friendly delivery of high-quality services to the community.

ACCGov seeks a highly ethical, decisive, strategic, transparent, collaborative, and values-driven servant leader with a high level of emotional intelligence and advanced communication and interpersonal skills to become its next Manager to lead a complex City-County consolidated government.

Candidates should possess a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field with a minimum of 10 years of experience in local government management involving progressive responsibility including: project oversight, staff supervision, problem-solving, municipal finance, community relations, economic development and comprehensive planning. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job may also be considered. Six years of supervisory experience is required, along with a valid driver’s license. ICMA Credentialed Manager (ICMA-CM) designation desired.

Desired starting salary of $220,000 - $275,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Residency within Athens-Clarke County desired within a reasonable period following appointment.
