OHV Trail Intern - Individual Placement

Overview

The Larimer County Conservation Corps (LCCC) offers positions to young adults to spend a season serving on meaningful conservation projects throughout the Front Range of Colorado. The LCCC is based in Fort Collins, Colorado and is an accredited corps through the Colorado Youth Corps Association and The Corps Network.

This new internship position works directly with the US Forest Service and serves as a member of an (Off Highway Vehicle) roads & trails maintenance team to maintain, repair, and build OHV routes throughout the Forest Service unit to ensure protection of wildlife habitat and water quality in addition to improving recreational access to forest lands.

This is a temporary position from May 1 - November 14 (tentative). Work will be completed in Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest and Pawnee National Grassland, working alongside US Forest Service Staff.

The standard schedule for this position is Wednesday-Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with occasional weekend work for volunteer events. This schedule may be adjusted for holidays, training, weather, logistical needs, or other unforeseen circumstances. Training dates will be scheduled and communicated before employment begins.

Responsibilities

What you'll be doing:

• Maintain Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) routes, including roads and trails, by applying gravel and other materials, restoring impacted areas, and replacing signage as needed.
• Prepare construction materials, ensure proper tool maintenance, and document completed work.
• Plan and coordinate logistics for OHV trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, including conducting trail logs, road and trail condition assessments, and prescription surveys as needed.
• Perform OHV trail maintenance independently or as a leader of a small project crew.
• Oversee routine maintenance of OHV roads and trails at dispersed recreation sites, including cleanup and natural restoration.
• Educate OHV crew members, volunteers, and visitors on regulations related to OHV route maintenance. Inspect assigned areas to ensure compliance with regulations and specifications.
• Engage with forest visitors as needed, providing education on OHV route maintenance and cleanup.
• Assist with compliance checks and inspections for Special-Use permits. Support enforcement of OHV restrictions by maintaining regulatory signage and ensuring adherence to established guidelines.

What we're looking for:

• Knowledge of OHV route and area surveying, maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction principles to effectively plan and implement projects.
• Basic understanding of data collection and analysis methods to support project decision-making.
• Technical expertise in the use and limitations of handheld motorized power drilling equipment for OHV route construction and reconstruction.
• Understanding of forest resources and their role in trail maintenance to ensure access to recreational areas.
• Ability to assess soil types, oversee site preparation, and apply appropriate conservation practices for effective trail maintenance and construction.
• Proficiency in using construction tools and the ability to train crews in their proper use for road and trail repairs.
• Strong communication skills to effectively engage with the public, explain management principles, and monitor activities.
• Strong planning and organizational skills to coordinate daily schedules, prioritize tasks, and complete assignments efficiently.
