OverviewThe Larimer County Conservation Corps (LCCC) offers positions to young adults to spend a season serving on meaningful conservation projects throughout the Front Range of Colorado. The LCCC is based in Fort Collins, Colorado and is an accredited corps through the Colorado Youth Corps Association and The Corps Network.
This new internship position works directly with the US Forest Service and serves as a member, trails maintenance team, to maintain, repair, and build trails throughout the Forest Service unit to ensure protection of wildlife habitat and water quality in addition to improving recreational access to forest lands.
Trail Intern - Individual Placement: is a temporary position from May 1 - November 14 (tentative). Position will perform various trail maintenance and rock work in Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest, working alongside US Forest Service Staff.
The standard schedule for this position is Monday-Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with occasional weekend work for volunteer events. This schedule may be adjusted for holidays, training, weather, logistical needs, or other unforeseen circumstances. Training dates will be scheduled and communicated before employment begins.

ResponsibilitiesWhat you'll be doing:
- Construct and maintain trails using gravel and other materials, restore impacted areas, and replace signage as needed.
- Explain trail maintenance regulations specific to the Wilderness Act and inspect assigned areas for compliance.
- Interact with forest visitors as needed, providing education on trail maintenance and cleanup.
- Assist in developing and executing trail management plans based on approved land management guidelines, including preparing annual trail operating plans and implementing trail or wilderness bridge construction and reconstruction projects.
- Support planning efforts for future trail construction, maintenance, and restoration projects by conducting trail assessments, condition surveys, and site evaluations. Recommend facility locations and document area characteristics. Train crews in trail construction and revegetation techniques, working independently or leading small project teams.
- Develop and support volunteer programs by recruiting, training, motivating, and supervising volunteers. Prepare necessary documentation, including volunteer agreements and travel requests, ensuring all records are properly maintained.
- Assist in the operation and maintenance of developed and dispersed recreation areas, implementing improvement plans as needed.
- Conduct compliance checks and inspections for Special-Use permits. Help enforce Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) restrictions by maintaining regulatory signage and ensuring compliance with established regulations.

What we're looking for:
- Knowledge of Forest Service recreation and wilderness management practices, including dispersed and developed areas, to evaluate trails, assess maintenance plans, coordinate construction activities, and contribute to recreation development planning.
- Understanding of trail and bridge survey methods, maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction standards to effectively plan and implement projects.
- Basic knowledge of data collection and analysis methods to support project planning and decision-making.
- Technical expertise in the use and limitations of handheld motorized power drilling equipment for trail construction and reconstruction.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to document technical work, educate the public, and convey information clearly.
- Proficiency in safely operating and maintaining trucks, power tools, and hand tools for facility and trail maintenance.
- Ability to provide clear instructions and demonstrate proper, safe work methods for tasks that require sequential steps.
- Knowledge of supervision and personnel management practices to effectively plan work schedules and oversee team operations.
