    We are excited to share that the Construction Management Division is seekingan Administrative Intern (Non-Career).

    The Team:
    The Engineering Bureau consists of two distinct and interrelated groups: Design/Maintenance & Program Delivery. These two groups consist of 6 distinct divisions: Construction Management, Design, Maintenance, Program Management, Survey and Project Controls. The Construction Management Division is responsible for managing construction and professional services contracts awarded by the Board of Harbor Commissioners, and managing the Port's Labor Compliance Program.

    This is an unclassified (Non-Civil Service) position. Non-career positions typically average 20 hours per week, up to 29 hours a week, for a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    The Role...

    Under general supervision, the Construction Management Intern performs routine engineering work.

    How you get to contribute:

    Technical
    • Collect, compile and analyze statistical and technical data related to Construction Management activities.
    • Assist in minor construction inspection.
    • Work closely with the project team monitoring the quality, cost and scheduling
      of construction projects.
    • Prepare cost estimates from engineering plans for infrastructure improvements.
    • Reviews and processes Request for Information, submittals and other construction contract documentation.
    • Review contractor’s monthly progress payment requests.
    • Review contractor’s change order cost and schedule impact.
    • Assist with preparation of change order packages.
    • Provide technical assistance to Engineering staff.
    • Keep supervisor informed regularly on status of work activities and issues.
    • Interact closely with the Construction Management Division and with other divisions as required.
    • Assist with developing the project schedule, reviewing the schedule, and updating the schedule.
    • Assist with reviewing and tracking RFI’s and submittals.
    • Prepare and track punchlist progress.
    • Assist with closeout documentation.
    • Attend weekly project meetings and design review meetings.
    • Review contractors' as-built drawings.
    • Other related duties as required.
    Interpersonal
    • Correspond and communicate with internal Port employees and consultants via email, phone and live meetings.
    • Maintain a positive relationship with internal Port divisions, contractors and consultants.
    • Attend weekly project meetings and design review meetings.
    • Perform site visits, take photographs, and note key elements of work taking place.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    Required Experience and Qualifications:
    • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program with a focus/emphasis in Civil Engineering, Construction Management and/or related field in a junior, senior standing or enrolled in a graduate level program.
    • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and areas of technical expertise is required.
    • Be familiar with MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other related applications.
    • Knowledge of Bluebeam software is desired.
    • Possess strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as the ability to work independently.
    • Possess good oral and written skills, and an ability to effectively communicate ideas in a clear, concise, and professional manner.

    SPECIAL NOTE This is an unclassified, "at-will" position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any time. In such an event, the candidate has no right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach.

    The non-career Intern position typically works 20 hours per week, and cannot exceed an average of 29 hours per week throughout the year, up to a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.
