    Please learn more about our department and how we serve our community: What does the Watershed Protection Department do?

    POSITION OVERVIEW :
    The Watershed Protection Department protects lives, property, and the environment of our community by reducing the impact of flooding, erosion, and water pollution. This position is part of the department’s Strategy and Planning Office and is in the Geospatial Analysis Division. The Geospatial Analysis Division helps internal and external customers address spatial data questions. Our services include research, data exploration, interactive data analysis, visualization (maps and dashboards), and the presentation and narratives of the analysis. Our work contributes to an understanding of Austin’s growth and change in the context of Watershed Protection’s activities.

    This position will be responsible for identification, analysis, and management of department data. The position will also conceptualize, model, and present on datasets to assist in problem solving and decision making for City leadership. This position will also lead and oversee data classification and data-mining activities to enable more accurate analysis.

    The top candidate should be collaborative, inquisitive, proactive, enjoy problem solving, and have a thorough understanding of how to assist end users in the use of data to inform the decision-making process through education, innovative dashboards, relevant data representation, and through development of new services / products / solutions for users.

    The top candidate should be able to manage competing demands and deadlines, understand how to build and maintain relationships and see the intersection of WPD’s data with other departments and have a thorough understanding of Watershed’s services.

    Skills and experience include using ArcGIS and FME to create, edit, analyze, and visualize data. Skills should include critical thinking, analytical abilities, and the ability to lead and collaborate on complex projects. We are also interested in experience with analyzing large quantitative and qualitative datasets that have required data preparation, cleaning, exploration, and statistical analysis with the use of software such as Excel, R, and Python. This can include familiarity with datasets like the Census, Social Vulnerability, FEMA National Risk Index, and other data that can enhance the delivery of Watershed’s services.

    IT Data Analyst: $32.23 - $40.29
    IT Data Analyst Senior:
    $37.63 - $47.98

    Hours
    8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    Monday - Friday with the ability for a 60% telework schedule per week after initial training period. Exceptions may apply subject to the business needs of the department.

    Preferred Experience:
    • Leads and oversees data classification and data-mining activities to enable more accurate analysis. Implements statistical models to identify and reveal trends, patterns, and relationships in data to provide guidance to others for decision making processes.
    • Knowledge of data integration tools, data management architectures such as Data Warehouse, Data Lake, Data Hub Management, and data exploration techniques (binning, pivoting, summarizing, and finding correlations).
    • Understands the role that equity plays in the department and what role equity data, data bias, and data analysis can play in decision making.
    • Creates data visualizations and reports to present to audiences using presentation tools.

    City Government
