DescriptionVacancies are in the Department of Sports & Recreation. Under general supervision, to direct swimming program and supervise the personnel staff at a swimming pool or beach and be responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the swimming pool or beach facilities. Assigns Lifeguards to their stations, conducts periodic drills of Lifeguards in swimming, boating, rescue work, and resuscitations; orients new guards in assignments. Adjusts or modifies work assignments whenever necessary to insure maximum work performance and service to the public. Teaches Lifeguards advances and latest methods of water safety, first aid, rescue techniques, boating, proper equipment's use, skin diving SCUBA techniques and basic water survival methods. Organizes and supervises all swimming's, life saving, water safety and diving classes. Checks all equipment such as inhalators, resuscitators, first-aid equipment's, life-saving equipment, boats and outboard motors. Plans, organizes and directs all special events and programs for the pool or beach; prepares facilities for the program and supervises the control of the participants and spectators; prepares publicity releases of events to newspapers. Responsible for the cleanliness and orderly appearance of Lifeguard's quarters, equipment, dressing room facilities for the public, first-aide room, check room and other pool facilities; directs the maintenance staff in keeping the pool or beach clean. Checks daily receipts of the pool or beach and deposits them in daily bank. Keeps a time record for each employee; prepares reports on attendance and activities at the pool or beach. Performs related work as required.
This is a 1716 union Part-Time position.
Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesThe examination will consist of rating your training and experience as contained on your application. The examination may also include a written test, an oral test, physical swimming examination, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The test is designed to measure:
Knowledge of: - Principles, methods and practices involved in the efficient and effective supervision and directions of a swimming pool or beach facility.
- The latest life-saving methods and techniques and first-aid practices as applied to accidents in the water and surrounding areas.
Ability to: - Plan, organize, direct and supervise swimming programs, special aquatic events and related activities at a swimming pool or beach.
- Teach swimming and life saving methods.
- Enforce regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
- Officiate at public water contest and exhibitions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
- Prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies, and to take the necessary action.
Qualifications Open to all applicants who meet the following qualifications: Five (5) years of experience as a Lifeguard.
Licenses; Certifications; Special Requirements Must possess an active valid First Aid Certificate issued by American Red Cross (Lifeguard certification)
