    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

    Martin Dies, Jr State Park provides excellent outdoor learning opportunities and activities. As the park interpreter, the candidate will work directly with the visiting public to bring forth an understanding of the natural and cultural resources through developed programs / activities.

    Under the direction of the Assistant Park Superintendent and in cooperation with the Regional Interpretive Specialist, this position performs routine (journey-level) operations work in a state park. Responsible for interpretation, educational programming, promoting conservation, and stewardship of Martin Dies, Jr. State Park and its natural and cultural Resources. Researches, plans, develops, facilitates, and evaluates interpretive and educational programs, exhibits, guided walks and tours, special events, trainings, and outreach programs based on the interpretive master plan of the park and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) mission. Conducts site and agency promotion and marketing. Assists with oversight of volunteer programs training and management. Maintains and develops administrative and interpretive files and reports. Assists with the staffing, operation, cleaning, and maintenance of the park's interpretive center. Coordinates with park administration on interpretive programs delivered in and out of the park by others, such as park staff, hosts, volunteers, and/or interns. Assists with park maintenance operations and visitor services as assigned including cleaning of park buildings and grounds, removal of non-native/invasive flora, issuing permits, helping customers, and other park projects as needed. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree.

    Experience :

    No experience required.

    Licensure :

    Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid state driver's license.

    NOTE : Retention of position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

    ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS :

    Education :

    One year of experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Park Administration, Recreation and Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Geology, Anthropology/Archeology, History, or closely related field.

    Experience :

    Experience in customer service.

    Experience in park operations.

    Experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

    Knowledge of natural and cultural resources management.

    Knowledge of special event planning and implementation.

    Knowledge of facility, equipment, and ground maintenance.

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in effective interpretive techniques, program preparation, and presentations.

    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts.

    Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.

    Skill in planning, organizing, and implementing public presentations and guided tours for various age groups.

    Skill in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators, and other mechanical equipment.

    Ability to work as a member of a team.

    Ability to collect revenue and issue permits.

    Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities.

    Ability to train other staff and/or volunteers.

    Ability to survey customers for program quality.

    Ability to assist with various park duties such as maintenance, administration, or customer service duties as needed.

    Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program, work rules and standards of behavior.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use.

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

    Required to travel 10% with possible overnight stays.

    Required to operate a state vehicle.

    Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures.

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
