GENERAL PURPOSE Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance and repair of sewer collection systems.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the supervision of the Wastewater Superintendent and/or Wastewater Collections Maintenance Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED None generally. May supervise maintenance personnel.
Minimum Qualifications/Special RequirementsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and 3 years qualifying experience, including 1 year of operational experience as a Grade I-IV certified wastewater collections operator; or
- Two (2) years post-secondary education in a related technical field and 1 year of qualifying experience, including 1 year as a Grade I-IV certified wastewater collections operator; or
- A bachelor’s degree in a qualifying discipline and 1-year experience as a certified Grade I-IV wastewater collections operator.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Valid Arizona Driver's license and
- Class B CDL will be obtained within six months of hire.
Wastewater Collection Operator I - Arizona Certification as a Wastewater Collection Operator Grade I or the ability to obtain one within a year of hire
- High School Diploma, two (2) year Postsecondary Degree, Bachelor’s Degree or higher
Wastewater Collection Operator II - Arizona Certification as a Wastewater Collection Operator Grade I
- High School Diploma and one (1) year of qualified experience as a Grade I operator; or
- Two (2) year Postsecondary Degree and one (1) year of qualifying experience, including six (6) months as a Grade 1; or
- Bachelor's Degree or Higher and six (6) months of qualifying experience
Wastewater Collection Operator III - Arizona Certification as a Wastewater Collection Operator Grade III
- High School Diploma and two (2) years of qualifying experience, including one year as a Grade 2 operator; or
- Two (2) Year Postsecondary Degree and 18 months of qualifying experience as a Grade 2 operator; or
- Bachelor's Degree or Higher and one (1) year of qualifying experience
Wastewater Collection Operator IV - Arizona Certification as a Wastewater Collection Operator Grade VI
- High School Diploma and three (3) years of qualifying experience, including one year as a Grade 3 operator; or
- Two (2) Year Postsecondary Degree and 30 months of qualifying experience, including one (1) year as a Grade 3 operator; or
- Bachelor's Degree or Higher and two (2) years of qualifying experience
Essential FunctionsESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Operates and maintains sewage lift stations; Cleans wet wells and operates pumps and valves to control and adjust flow.
- Inspects collection lines for stoppages or damage, performs preventive maintenance on collection system equipment, unplugs, cleans and maintains lines, sets up traffic safety devices.
- Hydraulically cleans collection lines with high pressure equipment. Uses CCTV equipment to inspect City collection system activities.
- Checks and maintains manholes for corrosion and roaches. Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance, and collection system activities as set by Local, State and Federal Statutes.
- Shall maintain collection system to meet CMOM compliance.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES- Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES- Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in wastewater collection system maintenance and operation activities.
- Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to perform process control calculations; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
