What You'll Be DoingThe Wake County On Site Water Protection Division is seeking a highly qualified
Environmental Consultant to join the Wastewater Administration program. This position is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic team responsible for conducting site and soil evaluations in compliance with North Carolina laws and regulations regarding sewage treatment and disposal systems. The focus will be on large and small land division projects, conducting quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) reviews, and providing guidance for staff development. The role will also involve reviewing accessory structure applications within Wake County, as well as contributing to seasonal tasks such as swimming pool inspections, grave removals, and natural disaster shelter duties.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations of sites and soil conditions to ensure compliance with NC laws for sewage treatment and disposal systems
- Specialize in both large and small-scale land division projects, ensuring all systems meet regulatory requirements and perform as expected
- Perform quality assurance and quality control reviews to ensure proper implementation of wastewater systems
- Assist with providing training and guidance for staff development, fostering professional growth within the team
- Evaluate and review applications for accessory structures related to wastewater systems, ensuring compliance with local regulations
- Apply a strong understanding of complex site evaluations, septic system installation procedures, and system functionality after the issuance of an operation permit
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with customers, private sector consultants, and the building community to promote collaboration and support
- Perform seasonal tasks, including swimming pool inspections, grave removal, and natural disaster shelter duties as needed

The Basics (Required Education and Experience) - Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or related field
- Three years of experience in environmental planning, inspections or engineering
- Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience) - NC Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS)
- NC DHHS authorizations (transferable)
- North Carolina Licensed Soil Scientist (LSS)
- 3 Years of Experience working as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS)
