    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

    Working with the Preservation Services team in the Cultural Resources program, the historian position will help protect and preserve the historical buildings, landscapes, and stories of Texas State Parks.

    Under the direction of the Preservation Services Team Lead, this position performs advanced (senior-level) historical research work. Work involves conducting research, writing, and editing historical reports, analyzing cultural and historical resources for planning purposes, and responding to requests for information regarding the history of Texas State Parks and State Historic Sites. Research is conducted in support of Cultural Resources Program and State Parks Division initiatives regarding Texas State Park properties. The position will help plan, develop, and implement historic preservation related research projects and conduct investigations of historic resources for reports and landmark designations. Position coordinates records and electronic datasets for the Cultural Resources Program, as well as reports and other paper documents to include historical archives, architectural data, and repairs/restoration and assessments of historic buildings. Position manages Cultural Resources Program web and social media sites related to state parks' history. Position serves as a liaison and provides technical assistance to other government agencies, community organizations, and the public regarding Texas State Parks history and its built heritage. Position provides consultative and technical assistance to park staffs, other state park programs, and interpretation staff. Position researches funding sources for history, architecture, and archeology projects and writes grant applications. Candidate must have very strong written and spoken communication skills. Performs additional related duties as assigned. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in History, Public History, American Studies, or closely related field.

    Experience:

    Three years of employment experience in conducting historical research and writing in support of Public History, Texas History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or closely related field.

    Experience in conducting oral history interviews

    Experience with digitization of records and/or digital records storage systems and processes.

    Licensure:

    Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license.

    NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

    ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

    Experience:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in History, Public History, American Studies, Museum Science, or closely related field may substitute for two years of employment experience in conducting historical research and writing in support of Public History, Texas History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or closely related field.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in History, Public History, American Studies, Museum Science, or closely related field

    Experience:

    Experience in research and development of grant proposals;

    Experience in researching land records and archives;

    Experience in researching New Deal and governmental history;

    Experience working with a wide variety of records-architectural drawings, historical photographs, historical and architectural reports, and original/copies of research materials;

    Experience conducting training or educational program associated with historical topics;

    Experience managing social media or web-based sharing of historical information;

    Five years of employment experience in conducting historical research and writing in support of Public History, Texas History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or closely related field.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of American historiography, and applied history research techniques;

    Knowledge of American twentieth century history;

    Knowledge of Texas history and Texas libraries/archives/museums;

    Knowledge of historic architecture and historic landmark criteria;

    Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and formatting to accurately prepare and edit written correspondence;

    Knowledge of various office automation software programs, tools, and techniques to produce a variety of documents, such as letters, reports, spreadsheets, databases, and graphs;

    Knowledge of the sources, methods, and techniques used in historical research;

    Knowledge of Texas history; and of state and federal preservation programs;

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook;

    Skill in effective interaction with staff at all levels of the department and other state agencies and organizations;

    Skill in managing diverse data and creating meaningful datasets for historical analysis and archiving;

    Skill in discussing and interpreting history to the public;

    Skill in understanding New Deal history, the development of the CCC, the creation of historic sites, and their place in American history;

    Skill in applying National Register and State Antiquities Landmark criteria to historic structures;

    Skill in researching grant opportunities and grant writing;

    Ability to apply historic significance and integrity criteria to buildings for potential landmark purposes;

    Ability to critically evaluate sources of data and establish validity of historical information;

    Ability to represent TPWD with professional organizations, governmental entities, and the public in support of Texas State Parks;

    Ability to prepare or verify written materials presented for publication;

    Ability to develop, coordinate, and implement project goals and initiatives within identified timeframes;

    Ability to work as a member of a team;

    Ability to perform historical research;

    Ability to evaluate and correlate source material;

    Ability to communicate effectively;

    Ability to supervise the work of others;

    Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Required to work 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; alternative work schedule may be available;

    May be required to work occasional weekends;

    This position is suitable to telework two days per week and the candidate may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval;

    Required to work overtime, as necessary;

    Required to travel 15% with possible overnight stays;

    Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures;

    May be required to operate a State vehicle;

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
