This recruitment is only open to current San Bernardino County, San Bernardino County Fire Protection District or Special Districts employees who hold a regular, contract, extra-help, recurrent, Public Service Employee, Work Experience Program (WEX) or intern position.

The Probation Department is recruiting for Probation Officer IIIs who perform a variety of complex, specialized functions relative to the investigation, surveillance, supervision, and rehabilitation of adult and juvenile probationers and Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS). Probation Officer IIIs work on special assignments such as coordinating and training probation officers in the area of assignment; acting as safety officer; performing personnel investigations; conducting new employee background investigations; performing program evaluations; planning and implementing department projects; making presentations to community groups; and serving on participative management work groups/committees. Probation Officer IIIs may also advise, instruct, and assist with the supervision of other Probation Officers.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Availability: Incumbent may be assigned to institutions or special programs and may be assigned shift or variable work, including weekend and holiday hours.
Peace Officer Status: Incumbent must possess peace officer status and must be willing to complete the department's arming training and accept an armed position.
Background: Incumbent must maintain OR meet peace officer status (P.C. 832) and pass an extensive background investigation.
License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.
NOTE: Incumbents must become familiar with Evidence-Based Practices and Cognitive Therapeutic Modalities.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet both the education and experience requirements for one the following options:
OPTION EDUCATION EXPERIENCE Option 1 Completion of a bachelor's degree or equivalent coursework from a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.
Three (3) years of experience as a journey-level Probation Officer.
Option 2 Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units in psychology, sociology, criminology, criminal justice or other closely related behavioral science field, to which half must be upper division level units.
Four (4) years of experience as a journey-level Probation Officer.
Option 3 Associates degree or its equivalent coursework units in psychology, sociology, criminology, criminal justice or other closely related behavioral science field.
Five (5) years of experience as a journey-level Probation Officer.
Option 4 Graduation from a U.S. high school, G.E.D. or a U.S. Department of Education approved High School Equivalency Test
Seven (7) years of experience as a journey-level Probation Officer.
** NOTE : Probation Officer I experience is not considered to be journey level, or qualifying experience.
*A list of coursework in a qualifying field or legible copies of transcripts (unofficial are acceptable) must be submitted with the application unless candidate has qualified associate's degree or higher.
Desired Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess diverse experience as a probation officer, current Peace Officer status, experience in juvenile, adult, and administrative assignments, leadership skills, the ability to work as a member of a team, and demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be willing to accept an armed position.
