    The Position

    About the Position:

    This recruitment is being conducted to fill one (1) full-time Animal Attendant vacancy and one (1) Extra Help Animal Attendant for the Napa County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center, a division of the Public Works Department at Napa County. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time, part-time, and limited-term vacancies as they occur over the next 12 months.

    The Napa County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center's mission is to serve the community by providing a safe and healthy environment for our citizens and their animals while promoting animal welfare and education about responsible pet ownership. We offer many programs and services, such as pet adoptions, lost and found pets, pet surrender, microchipping and licensing. The Animal Attendant assesses animals for temperament, behavior and adoption placement; feed, care for, exercise and provide training for animals; euthanize and dispose of animals by state laws; and promotes the benefits of spaying, neutering, microchipping, and licensing pets. The Animal Attendant performs all necessary work in maintaining the Animal Shelter and related areas in a clean and sanitary position and may assist with public and the front office staff. Our ideal candidates will like animals and treat animals humanely, and will have experience working with and caring for domestic animals in a veterinary hospital, humane society, ranch, farm, or another animal facility. The ideal candidates should be eager to work, learn new tasks, positive attitude, and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

    • Hourly Rate: $28.17 (Step 1) - $33.24 (Step 5)

    Extra Help positions are temporary assignments that are scheduled up to 29 hours per week (up to 1 , 000 hours per fiscal year.) Extra Help employees are not eligible for promotional opportunities that are open to regular part-time and full-time employees.

    Position Requirements:
    • Persons employed in this class must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
    • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred but not required.
    To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities. A desirable combination is:
    • Experience: Six (6) months of experience working with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital, humane society, or other animal facility; OR, possession of a valid registration as a Veterinary Technician in California. Note: Experience with personal pets is not considered qualifying. Experience on a ranch, farm, or with a humane society performing animal care and kennel work is considered qualifying.
    • Education: Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade including or supplemented by training in an animal-related field or in customer service.
    License or Certificate*
    • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
    • Possession of Euthanasia by Injection Certificate. Applicants who do not possess the Certificate may be appointed to the position, but the required course must be taken and the certificate obtained prior to permanent status being granted.

    *Any license, certification, or registration required for this position shall be maintained (i.e. active and in good standing) at all times during employment with Napa County. For continued employment with Napa County, you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.

    Disaster Service Workers

    Napa County employees automatically become Disaster Service Workers. This means that when Napa County experiences emergencies (earthquake, wildfire, power outage, flood, etc.) you may be asked to pivot from your regular duties to provide critical services to those affected by the emergency.     SALARY -
    Salaries are based on a five-step range. Appointments are usually made at the beginning step with advances occurring at six months and the completion of each year thereafter. Salary rates are reviewed annually.
