    The Position

    This a continuous Extra Help recruitment for Cook I/II in the Juvenile Hall at Napa County. Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis and will be reviewed weekly until the current vacancies are filled. The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future Extra Help vacancies as they occur over the next 12 months.


    • Cook I Hourly Rate: $26.42 (Step 1)
    • Cook II Hourly Rate: $28.82 (Step 1)
    • 3.5% COLA increase effective 7/01/2025
    • 3.5% COLA increase effective 7/01/2026
    • Extra Help Benefits Summary

    Extra Help positions are temporary assignments with limited benefits and are scheduled up to 29 hours per week (up to 1 , 000 hours per fiscal year.) Extra Help employees are not eligible for promotional opportunities that are open to regular part-time and full-time employees.

    About the Position & Department:
    The Napa County Probation Department operates adult and juvenile court-related services in the areas of investigation and supervision with the mission to enforce court orders to inspire positive change, transform the live of offenders, victims, and families, and promote community safety. The department is also responsible for the overall operation of the County’s Juvenile Hall, which provides custody, counseling, medical care and guidance of delinquent and custodial youth in a variety of short- and medium-term programs.     The Cook I is an entry-level position that works under general supervision, prepares, cooks and serves a variety of food for regular and special diets daily within the facility. In addition to having experience in preparing and cooking food in large quantities. The Cook II is a journey-level position that is responsible for the food preparation and serving activities for special programs, coordinating cooking activities, and providing lead supervision over other food service personnel.

    Our ideal candidate will be:
    • Experienced in commercial kitchen with a passion for food and cooking.
    • Able to obtain the Food Handler's card within thirty (30) days of appointment and must maintain the certificate for the duration of employment in this classification.
    • Aware of maintaining a safe, clean and sanitary environment.
    • Able to perform simple math computations in following recipes and other directions
    • Effective working with a wide variety of people


    Position Requirements:
    To qualify for the Cook I/II classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities. A desirable combination is:
    • COOK I EXPERIENCE: One year of experience in preparing, cooking, and serving meals in large quantities.
    • COOK II EXPERIENCE: Three years of experience in preparing, cooking and serving meals in large quantities
    • COOK I/II EDUCATION: Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write on the level required for successful job performance


    The Selection Process :
    Online applications will be accepted on a continuous basis and will be screened for minimum qualifications weekly until current extra help vacancy is filled.Department interviews will take place at a date determined by the department. Only those who meet the minimum qualifications of the department will be referred to the department for further consideration. Those selected will be required to go through an extensive background check through a private investigator, pass two live scans, and pass a pre-employment medical screening before being hired into the position.

    Disaster Service Workers:
    Napa County employees automatically become Disaster Service Workers. This means that when Napa County experiences emergencies (earthquake, wildfire, power outage, flood, etc.) you may be asked to pivot from your regular duties to provide critical services to those affected by the emergency (CA Govt Code § 31012).

    SALARY -
    Salaries are based on a five-step range. Appointments are usually made at the beginning step with advances occurring at six months and the completion of each year thereafter. Salary rates are reviewed annually.
