    The Position

    Bargaining Unit: Local 21 - Supervisory Management

    The Department of Conservation and Development (DCD) is seeking to fill three (3) Principal Building Inspector vacancies. The selected candidate will provide lead direction to field building inspection, code enforcement, energy efficiency program, or housing staff; perform residential field inspections on residential and commercial building construction projects and perform related work as required.

    DCD is headed by a Director, and within DCD there are four (4) divisions under a Deputy Director: 1) Current Planning; 2) Policy Planning; 3) Building Inspection Services/Economic Development; 4) Business Operations Section. Additionally, there is a working section: Housing/CDBG/Federal Programs under an Assistant Deputy Director. DCD’s main facility is located in Martinez, CA. DCD also has a satellite office in Lafayette serving the Lafayette, Orinda, and Moraga communities. DCD has a total staffing of approximately 165 positions serving the entire County of Contra Costa.

    What you will typically be responsible for:
    • Planning, organizing, and directing the activities of inspectors performing building inspections
    • Managing building inspectors in responding to emergencies and natural disasters
    • Developing, coordinating, and conducting training programs for inspectors
    • Reviewing inspectors work for compliance with State Laws and/or County Ordinances
    • Consulting with contractors, superintendents, Board of Supervisor staff, Municipal Advisory Councils, Contract City staff, and private inspectors
    • Reviewing building plans and construction work for compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
    • Providing quality customer service to contractors, property owners, and superintendents and advising them on permitted use of materials, installation methods and code requirements
    • Attending and possibly making presentations to the Board of Supervisors

    Minimum Qualifications

    License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out of state valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.

    Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or a high school proficiency certificate.

    Experience: One (1) year of full-time experience performing duties comparable to those of a Senior Building Inspector in Contra Costa County.

    Certifications Required: Possession of certifications in Residential Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical construction, AND one or more certifications in Commercial Building construction from a recognized state, national or international association pursuant to Health and Safety Code Section 18949.28(a). Certifications must be maintained in good standing for the duration of employment at all levels of Building Inspector.

    Certification must be maintained as a condition of employment.
