    Engineering Intern - Stormwater

    Hourly rate: $18.50

    The City of Olathe is accepting applications for an Engineering Internship to begin in May, 2025.

    The Engineering Intern supports the City of Olathe's Water Quality Program.This role involves both field and office work.

    The Stormwater Engineering Intern supports the Stormwater Water Quality program by collecting data, recording field observations, analyzing water quality data, and assisting with compliance documentation for EPA and local stormwater regulations.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Assist in investigating, gathering data and analyzing information.
    • Perform stormwater basin inspections.
    • Record and maintain accurate data.
    • Conduct residential erosion and sediment control inspections and enforce compliance.
    • Perform stormwater/land disturbance permit inspections.
    • Conduct illicit discharge inspections.


    Qualifications

    Experience: Entry level experience in surveying, stormwater management best practices and graphical information systems (GIS) is preferred but not required. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook is required.

    Education: College student pursuing a degree in Engineering or Environmental Science degree is preferred. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education.

    Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver’s license with a favorable driving record is required.

    Environmental or Physical Demands: Work is primarily conducted outdoors in various locations and weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind. Requires repetitive physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, climbing, and standing or walking for extended periods. Fieldwork may involve exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, fumes, temperature extremes, and vibrations. Some tasks are performed on uneven or water-soaked ground. Work may take place near excavations, confined spaces, mechanized equipment, roadways, and bodies of water, requiring high alertness and safety awareness. Strong sensory awareness (sight, hearing, and smell) is essential for identifying potential hazards and ensuring safety.
