    Role

    Under general supervision, performs skilled work of considerable difficulty in maintenance, repair, and installation of all types of heating and cooling systems, as well as controls, and related devices in the upkeep of County facilities and equipment.

    Major Duties, Responsibilities

    • Performs troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance of HVAC, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment including furnaces, air handlers, condensers, heat pumps, package units, chillers, boilers, medium and low temp refrigeration units, ice machines and make up air systems.
    • Performs preventative maintenance inspections and repairs in all County facilities including, but not limited to, all heating and cooling systems and controls.
    • Responds to emergencies relating to heating and cooling issues. Evaluates situation and takes proper corrective action.
    • Installs new heating and cooling units and related devices. Reviews layouts and interfaces for renovations and upgrades.
    • Performs acceptance inspections for contractor performed work of new construction and renovations.
    • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:
    High school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience:
    A minimum of four (4) years of experience in HVAC-R trades.

    Additional Requirements:
    Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
    Refrigerant Recovery Certification.

    Other Skills

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:
    • Methods, practices, tools, equipment, and materials of the heating and cooling trade.
    • Heating and cooling regulations and controls.
    • Standards and regulations pertaining to the repair and replacement of heating and cooling equipment.
    • Design and draft various system layouts.
    • Operation and troubleshooting electromechanical and DDC control systems.
    • All applicable mechanical codes.
    • Trade specific tools, vacuum pumps, recovery machines, torches gauges, and meters.
    • Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
    • Clerical office practices and procedures.
    • Research techniques and report writing.
    • Current Microsoft Office software.
    • Filing and recordkeeping.

    Skill in:
    • Critical thinking and problem-solving.
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.
    • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
    • Organization and adherence to detail.

    Ability to:
    • Interpret codes and schematics.
    • Read plans, schematics, specifications, and drawings.
    • Estimate labor or material costs from work plans.
    • Install, reconfigure, and repair a variety of heating and cooling fixtures.
    • Recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
    • Manage multiple tasks/priorities with frequent interruptions.
    • Draw or letter charts, schedules, graphs, maps or similar objects.
    • Measure distance using a tape measure and/or calibrated instruments.
    • Work in jail environment and around inmates in secured areas.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
    • Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
    • Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
    • Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
    • Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.

    Work Environment:
    The work environment is associated with various indoor and outdoor locations, in all weather conditions and includes exposure to loud noise, blood borne pathogens, dust, fumes, mist, and chemicals.

    Physical Requirements:
    Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time; move, lift, push, pull a variety of heavy objects; mix and work with cleaning fluids, chemicals, or similar solutions using normal protective equipment; remain in a standing position for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds with assistance.
