    DUTIES

    ANNUAL SALARY

    $54,726 to $80,033; $57,712 to $84,355; and $60,948 to $89,094.

    NOTES :

    Annual salary is at the start of the pay range. The current salary range is subject to change. Please confirm the starting salary with the hiring department before accepting a job offer.
    Candidates from the eligible list are normally appointed to vacancies in the lower pay grade positions.


    A Traffic Painter and Sign Poster paints and plasticizes parking and traffic control markings on streets and curbs, parking lots, and airfield areas; and installs and maintains non-electric parking and traffic control signs.

    REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

    Eighteen months of full-time paid experience as a helper to a Traffic Painter and Sign Poster; or as a helper doing a variety of semiskilled manual tasks in painting, construction, installation, maintenance or repair activities.

    PROCESS NOTES

    Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience at the time of filing may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.
    A valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required at the time of appointment. Candidates will not be eligible for appointment if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI.
    The positions of Traffic Painter and Sign Poster in the Department of Transportation require a valid Class B driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) prior to the completion of probation. Candidates will not be eligible for appointment if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI.
    The positions of Traffic Painter and Sign Poster in the Los Angeles World Airports require a valid Class A or B driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at the time of appointment. Candidates will not be eligible for appointment if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI.
    An employee in this position may be required to work a four-day forty-hour workweek, and be subject to weekend or evening work assignments.

You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to apply for this examination as a promotional candidate; 2) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles on a part-time or exempt basis who meet the minimum requirements; 3) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. Applications submitted during the filing period may be kept on file in the event that additional applicants need to be tested to meet hiring needs.

    The examination will consist of a weighted multiple-choice test and a pass/fail physical abilities test. The examination score will be based entirely on the multiple-choice test. In the on-line multiple-choice test the following competencies may be evaluated: Reading Comprehension; Judgment and Decision Making; Self Management; Teamwork; Safety Focus, including: safety regulations and requirements, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE); proper traffic delineation procedures outlined in the Work Area Traffic Control Handbook (WATCH); Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: the tools and equipment used in the installation and repair of non-electric parking and traffic control signs, including basic hand tools; the methods, procedures, materials and equipment used to paint parking and traffic control markings on streets, curbs, parking lots, and airfield areas, including proper preparation, calibration, and use of equipment; methods used to heat and apply thermoplastics, including appropriate heating temperature and application equipment; the maintenance of traffic painting and sign posting equipment and tools, including the inspection, calibration, oiling, and cleaning of equipment; reflectivity and the appropriate equipment calibration needed to ensure that glass beads and airfield markings remain in place after application; the methods, procedures, and equipment used in the removal of street and airfield pavement markings; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    The multiple-choice test will be proctored and administered on-line during a single session. Candidates invited to participate in the on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test as instructed from a remote location (i.e. their home) using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection. Candidates will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the dates and specific steps on how to take the multiple-choice test on-line. It is anticipated that the remote proctored multiple-choice test will be administered between TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2025 and MONDAY, MAY 19, 2025. Candidates who do not complete and submit the remote proctored multiple-choice test on-line using a computer by the specified date and time will not be considered further in this examination.

    Only those candidates who attain a passing score on the multiple-choice test may move forward to the physical abilities test. The physical abilities test is designed to measure physical capabilities and may include measures of muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Those candidates who are scheduled for the physical abilities test will be notified by e-mail of the date, time, and location of the physical abilities test, which will be administered in a single half-day session in Los Angeles.

    Candidates must achieve a final average score of 70% or higher on the multiple-choice test and pass the physical abilities test in order to be placed on the eligible list.

    NOTES :

    This examination is based on a validation study, and as provided by the Civil Service Commission Rule 4.20, the multiple-choice test will not be subject to candidate inspection.

    In conjunction with Civil Service Rules, applicants who have received a regular appointment to a City position or are on a reserve list will be considered Promotional candidates while all other applicants will be considered Open candidates.
    The promotional list will ordinarily be used ahead of the open competitive list. However, if open competitive candidates receive a higher score, without military credits, than the highest available promotional candidate, after adding seniority credit at the rate of 0.25 of a point for each year of continuous classified City service, the Civil Service Commission, upon request of the appointing authority, may approve certification of such open competitive candidates ahead of the promotional candidates.
    Based on City policy, you may be required to undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing prior to and during employment in this class.


    Notice :
