Why you’ll love this position:The Animal Health Division, under the direction of the state veterinarian, is responsible for controlling, eradicating, and testing for livestock disease in Missouri. This is accomplished through testing, vaccinations and regulatory programs involving cattle, swine, horses, poultry, exotic animals, sheep, goats, and small animals as provided under the Diseased Animal Law.
Our program is looking for a District Veterinarian in the West Central area of Missouri. This position will be responsible for the following counties:
Bates, Benton, Boone, Camden, Cass, Cole, Cooper, Henry, Hickory, Howard, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Miller, Moniteau, Morgan, Pettis, Saline, St. Clair, and Vernon. Candidates must live in one of the listed counties or be willing to relocate. Surrounding counties may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
This is a field and administrative veterinary position and will work in the designated territory rather than report to an office on a daily basis.
Salary: $80,000.16 - $85,000.08 annually plus full state benefit package (see benefits section below)
Additional benefits include payment of veterinary license fee, AVMA and MVMA dues, and continuing education.

That’s almost 64% of your annual wages! - Assist with diversified programs for control and/or eradication of livestock diseases such as brucellosis, tuberculosis, pseudorabies, chronic wasting disease (CWD), and equine infectious anemia in a designated district of the state.
- Conduct official inspections of livestock markets, slaughter establishments, hatcheries and/or breeder facilities to ensure compliance with state and federal statutes and regulations; identify violations and recommend corrective measures to owners or managers.
- Conduct livestock and poultry investigations; gather information and trace the movement of diseased or exposed livestock to determine the source of exposure; trace slaughtered reactors back to owners; prepare the required epidemiology reports relating to the investigations.
- Contact owners of infected or suspect herds or flocks and explain regulations relating to disease control and eradication; prepare individualized plans for infected herds or flocks; initiate testing, tagging, branding or depopulation procedures when necessary; issue quarantines, make recommendations to State Veterinarian and Deputy State Veterinarian regarding quarantine releases.
- Conduct meetings with private veterinarians, livestock owners and producers, market operators, dealers and other interested groups to explain and promote state and federal animal health statutes, regulations and programs.
- Assist with other Animal Health Division personnel and private veterinarians performing health inspections at the Missouri State Fair, local livestock exhibits and large exhibitions throughout the state.
- Attend emergency management meetings as well as necessary and assigned training.
- Other Duties as assigned.
*Daily travel in the assigned west central region required (state vehicle provided). Some overnight travel and statewide travel required. Minimum Qualifications: - Graduation from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine AND
- Must obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Missouri AND
- Must obtain federal accreditation to perform animal regulatory work within the time frames established by the Missouri Dept. of Agriculture.
- Must possess a valid MO Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications: - Two (2) or more years of experience as a veterinarian involving the care and treatment of large animals.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
