    The Position

    Bargaining Unit: Firefighters Local 1230 - Fire Suppress & Prevent Unit

    Firefighters employed by the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District can expect to engage directly in firefighting, emergency medical care, technical rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, disaster responses, fire prevention, public education, and community service.     What you will typically be responsible for:
    • Treating injured victims in traffic accidents, fires, and other dangerous circumstances. Providing care and assistance to patients suffering from medical emergencies as part of an advanced life support fire company.
    • Performing hazard mitigation activities by responding to and controlling structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle fires, hazardous material releases, and other hazardous conditions.
    • Assisting with fire prevention and public education activities.
    • Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
    • Working holidays, weekends, and additional shifts when staffing vacancies require it.
    • Participating as a team member in various specialized rescue disciplines.

    • CCCFPD is an all-risk fire agency that provides services from many different platforms. As a firefighter with CCCFPD you could be assigned to suppression on an engine company or truck company; to the air division providing service from a helicopter; to the marine division providing service aboard a fire boat; to the heavy fire equipment program providing service from a bulldozer; or as an auxiliary member of the USAR or hazmat team.

The fire station becomes a second home for many, with meals prepared and shared together like a family.

For instance, our firefighters work 48 hours on duty and have 96 hours off duty. Fire stations commonly have sleeping and living quarters, along with kitchens and showers, allowing for meals and rest when incidents are not occurring.

    • As a Firefighter you must stay physically fit and must possess stamina, endurance, and strength to perform in an emergency.
    • You will need to be comfortable with exposure to extreme environmental conditions.
    • Although trained to make wise decisions and prepare for emergencies, a firefighter knows the risk of injury is present on every call.

    Required Documentation:

    • Valid California or out of state Motor Vehicle Operator's License
    • Valid California Emergency Medical Technician-1 (EMT-1) Certificate
    • Valid BLS CPR card
    • CPAT Test: To be considered for this position, you must have successfully passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) administered by FCTC on or after October 1, 2024 (within the last 6 months). You have until April 6, 2025 to take the CPAT and provide a copy of the CPAT card to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Human Resources via e-mail at humanresources@cccfpd.org . You can www.fctconline.org/cpat to register for an upcoming CPAT test. Our recruitment closes on March 30, 2025 but we are accepting CPAT cards until April 6, 2025. If you have not yet completed your CPAT but have an appointment scheduled on or before April 6, 2025 you must attach a screenshot of your appointment confirmation from FCTC to your application.


    Minimum Qualifications

    License Required:
    (1) Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License at time of appointment. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process. Prior to the completion of the one year probation period, must possess and maintain thereafter a valid Class B Restricted Firefighter California Motor Vehicle Operator's License to drive and operate fire apparatus; AND
    (2) Possession of a valid California Emergency Medical Technician-1 (EMT-1) Certificate. Must obtain Contra Costa County EMT-1 Accreditation within 60 days of appointment; AND
    (3) Prior to the completion of the one year probation period, must possess and maintain thereafter a Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations Level Certificate issued by the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

    Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificate.

    Experience:
    (1) Successful completion of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Fire Academy as a Firefighter-Recruit; OR
    (2) One year of active employment in a paid, full-time position as a sworn uniformed firefighter in a city, county, state or federal fire department.

    Age: At least 18 years of age at date of final filing of applications.

    Physical Requirements: Ability to meet such health standards as may be established by the County Medical Consultant.

    Selection Process

    CONVICTION HISTORY

    DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
