    The City of Santa of Santa Fe Springs Public Works Department is seeking a highly-motivated individual for the position of Water Utility Worker.
    PLEASE NOTE: Recruitment is scheduled to close on March 20th at 5pm. As such, interested Candidates are encouraged to apply early.

    Employment Type: Full-time position represented by the City of Santa Fe Springs City Employees Association.

    Work Schedule: Water Utility Worker is assigned a 4/10 work schedule between the hours 5:30am-3:30pm.
    POSITION PURPOSE:
    Under direct supervision, performs construction, maintenance, and repair of the City’s water production, storage, and distribution system; maintains, installs, and repairs valves, meters, piping, fittings, and control valves, and related tasks in a safe manner.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
    Receives direct supervision from the Water Utility Supervisor and/or Water Utility Lead Worker.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
    None

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    A. Held in Common:
    Supports the Mission of the City and its Elected and Appointed Officials.Provides courteous and timely service to the public as the ultimate employer.Works cooperatively with other City employees.Exhibits integrity and displays ethical behavior. B. Essential Job Specific Duties: Maintains, installs, repairs and operates valves, meters, pipes, fittings, fire hydrants, control valves, and other appurtenances. Installs and replaces water meters.Reset, replace, maintain, and installs meter boxes. Repairs and rebuilds fire hydrants. Reads and updates drawings, water atlas, and blueprints; maps and logs locations for meters, fire hydrants, valves, and fire lines. Provides customer service.Reads water meters, water turn on/offs, meter repairs.Responds to customer inquiries. Must be able to work after normal working hours, on weekends and holidays. May be required to participate in the rotating standby / on-call program, and must be able to respond to call-outs and other emergencies within a 60 minute time frame. C. Other Job Specific Duties: Responds to concerns and questions from residents and businesses. Works with water section crews on various maintenance, installations, and repair projects. Breaks and removes asphalt and concrete using various power tools and other equipment. Taps water main for installation of new services. Performs water flushing and testing for disinfectant levels, pH, and temperature. Backfills trenches and performs concrete and asphalt repairs. Investigates and repairs water main and service leaks.Transports appropriate equipment and supplies to work areas.Sets up traffic control and barriers between work areas and pedestrian/vehicle pathways, to meet M.U.T.C.D. standards. Follows all applicable safety rules and regulations.Uses and maintains tools and equipment; Performs maintenance of water and other City facilities to maintain a clean and professional image/appearance.Performs other related duties as required.

    Ability to:
    • Maintain water distribution system.
    • Perform water construction and pipefitting tasks.
    • Read maps, charts, blueprints, and pressure flow gauges.
    • Safely and skillfully operate hand and power tools, machinery, and equipment.
    • Operate tapping and drilling machines for use on water mains.
    • Take accurate measurements and maintain logs.
    • Use protective equipment in a safe manner.
    • Follow written and oral instructions.
    • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
    • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
    • Work with accuracy and attention to detail.
    • Operate and use modern office equipment and computer software.
    • Effectively organize and prioritize assigned work.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other people.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    The following requirements generally demonstrate possession of the minimum requisite knowledge and ability necessary to perform the duties of the position. A typical way to obtain these would be:
    • High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California.
    • Ability to speak and understand Spanish desirable.
    • Two (2) years experience performing construction work, including one (1) year experience in plumbing or construction, repair, and maintenance work on a potable water distribution system desirable.
    • Valid State of California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
    • State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Division of Drinking Water D-1 Distribution Operator Certificate or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment.
    • State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Division of Drinking Water T-1 Treatment Operator Certificate or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment.


    NEPOTISM POLICY:
    Relatives may be appointed regardless of the designation of full or part-time classification. Candidates with relatives employed by the City will be excluded from applying for a vacancy if one or more of the following criteria exist: 1) The appointment of a relative would place one in a supervisory capacity directly over the other 2) The appointment would create a situation in which it is conceivable personal gain for one could be obtained by the actions of the other 3) The appointment would create a situation where performance or non-performance of either would have a direct effect upon the performance of the other 4) The appointment would create a situation where the confidentiality of either could be compromised. Candidates with relatives employed by the City will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. "Relative" shall be defined as: mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, spouse, domestic partner, step mother, step-father, step-sister, step-brother, stepchild and step grandchild.
