    JOB SUMMARY

    Under general supervision, installs, maintains, and repairs sewers, pumping stations, storm drains, and related structures; operates light and heavy equipment; and does other related work as required.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class.
    • Inspects, maintains and/or repairs drainage, and sewer systems to insure that systems are functioning properly.
    • Checks and cleans equipment and tools.
    • Monitors equipment for correct calibration settings.
    • Drives trucks of various sizes and weights while loading, hauling, and unloading various equipment, gravel, and sand.
    • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment referring defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
    • Operates construction and power equipment used in the sewer department.
    • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging (using air tools), manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and back-fitting.
    • Services sewer lift and other pumps.
    • Cleans and maintains storm drains according to the City’s maintenance schedule.
    • Operates video equipment in order to check sewer mains and storm drains.
    • May assist City electrician or other maintenance crews when needed.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

    Education/Training/Experience:
    • Graduation from high school or equivalent AND two (2) years of construction and maintenance experience related to sewers, storm drains, storm or sewer lift stations OR two (2) years of experience working in the allied trades.
    • Possession of or ability to obtain within one (1) year of appointment the Collection System Maintenance Grade 1 Certificate from the California Water Environmental Association (CWEA).

    Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements:
    • A valid Class A California driver’s license with Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months of employment.
    • Employees on “stand-by” status shall be required, at all times, to carry a functioning cell phone and be able to respond to calls within 30 minutes of being called/texted.
    • May be required to work shifts, weekends, and or holidays.
    • In accordance with California Government Code Section 3100, City of Manhattan Beach employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to protect the health, safety, lives, and property of the people of the State.

    Knowledge of:

    Tools, equipment, pumps, basic traffic control and methods used in sewer maintenance work; basic traffic control methods.

    Skills in:

    Operating motorized vehicles/equipment safely and effectively; including dump, pick-up, and utility trucks, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, generators, hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, sewer video equipment and telephone.

    Ability to:

    Perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time, use equipment safely and properly; receive training/ work in confined spaces; communicate effectively orally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and public.

    Part-time employees are enrolled in PARS (Public Alternate Retirement System). All part-time and seasonal employees contribute 7.5% each pay period on a pre-tax basis. If an employee reaches 1,000 hours within a fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) or is already a CalPERS member, then they are enrolled in CalPERS (Public Employees Retirement System).

    The City complies with California Labor Code 245-249 by providing paid sick leave for part-time hourly employees accordingly.

    The City of Manhattan Beach does not provide medical/dental/vision benefits to part-time employees. Eligible employees enrolled in CalPERS may opt into a CalPERS medical plan.

Polliwog Park features a play structure accessible to all, a man-made lake, the setting for Sunday afternoon concerts during the summer months and the site of the Manhattan Beach Historical Society.

With the support of the community, the school district has attained national recognition and over 93% of graduates enter institutions of higher learning after high school. Every year, the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation raises money to improve Manhattan Beach public schools and annually hosts the largest charity wine auction in Southern California, the Manhattan Wine Auction.

    We aren’t just about outdoor activities. In 2015, we opened a brand new branch of the Los Angeles County library, a two-story building in downtown Manhattan with ocean views.
