    Position Description

    Tacoma Power's Power Shared Services division is looking for an Emergency Management Intern to join their team this Summer!

    The Intern will get the opportunity to apply their skills & gain valuable experience working with Tacoma Power’s Emergency Management department.

    Responsibilities Include:
    • Under the guidance of Tacoma Power’s Emergency Manager or Asst. Emergency Manager update EM plans or documents as provided in red-line format.
    • Provide support to Tacoma Power’s Emergency Management department by preparing documents, training aids, presentations, etc. for scheduled exercises and support execution of these exercises by attending and helping to setup, teardown, and facilitate the exercises.
    • Provide assistance as needed and requested to Tacoma Power’s Emergency Management department for scheduled trainings such as document preparation, presentation development and assistance in execution during the actual training.
    • Provide support as needed for Tacoma Power Emergency Management to include incident response, follow-up for ongoing tasks, establishing contact with partner agencies, and additional duties as required.
    • As requested by the Tacoma Power Emergency Manager and/or Asst. Emergency Manager, inventory and catalog the quantity and condition of program equipment such as; cots, sheets, blankets, satellite phones, radios, etc.
    The expected duration of the internship 40 hours per week for at least 12 weeks, with the opportunity to extend as long as 50 weeks.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education*
    High School Diploma or GED

    Minimum Experience*
    1 year of post-high school training

    Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
    None

    *Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Effective oral and written communication.
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Ability to use software such as the Microsoft 365 Suite of programs.
    • Effective communication and listening skills.
    • Effective at problem solving & research.
    • Interest in technology & leveraging new tools for effective project management.
    Desired Skills:
    • Enrollment in an Emergency Management degree program or equivalent.
    • Completion of ICS classes; IS 100, IS 200, and IS 700
    • Excellent oral, written, & visual communication skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft 365.
    • Proficient in SharePoint, and/or other project management/business systems software programs.
    • Some skills with data management and dashboard/visualization tools such as Tableau.

    Other Employment Information

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
