    The County of Ventura Health Care Agency is seeking experienced critical care nurses to provide professional nursing care to patients in the intensive care unit.

    CERTIFICATION PAY: Incumbents in these classifications are eligible for certification pay at a rate of $0.813 per hour based on his or her scheduled work week hours and not exceed the scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification possessed up to a maximum of five (5) certifications.

    Additional incentives subject to the applicable section of the CNA MOA 2023-2028 ( found here ).

    EDUCATIONAL/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Possible educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

    AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency - ICU Registered Nurse II’s are represented by the California Nurses' Association (CNA) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

    NOTE: Salary placement will be determined according to the current CNA memorandum of agreement.

    The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-Term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this position only. There are currently two (2) Regular vacancies.

    Examples Of Duties

    Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
    • Uses the full scope of the Nurse Practice Act to assess, plan, organize, and provide nursing care to assigned patients.
    • Follows prescribed doctors' orders concerning treatments and medications.
    • Documents patient treatment and dispensing; makes patient observations; records and reports on all pertinent information, including changes in patient condition and general progress.
    • Provides follow-through on judgment within the scope of accepted nursing practice.
    • Assists doctors in examination and treatment.
    • Provides unit organization and is responsible for completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift.
    • Assists in training, supervision and evaluation of new and ancillary personnel.
    • Maintains current knowledge of nursing care developments and therapeutic measures; attends department in-services and staff development programs.
    • In Ambulatory Medicine areas, provides physician assistance and patient care as indicated and required.
    • May participate in quality assurance/utilization review or other non-direct patient care nursing assignments.
    • Performs other related duties as required.


    Typical Qualifications

    These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE: Requires twelve (12) months of recent full-time acute care registered nursing experience in an ICU department of an acute care hospital or equivalent setting or completion of the Ventura County Medical Center competency requirements* as evaluated and approved by the Chief Nursing Executive.

    *These competency requirements are in conformance with the California Board of Registered Nurses nursing requirements.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California or Registered Nurse licensure in another state with California licensure pending.
    • Must have a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment.
    • Must obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification by first day of employment.
    • Successful completion of the Health Care Agency Pharmacology examination within three (3) months of employment is mandatory for assignments within the Health Care Agency.

    DESIRED
    • Significant, recent professional nursing experience in ICU
    • Possession of a current, valid Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification.
    • Possession of a current, valid Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification.
    • Possession of a current, valid Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of: the theory, techniques, and practices of professional nursing; medical terminology and hospital routine and equipment; and medicines and narcotics.

    Working ability to: plan and organize nursing care; train and supervise non-professional staff; establish and maintain the confidence of patients and staff; maintain confidentiality of patient/client information; work effectively in different healthcare and/or hospital departments or shifts as required; establish and maintain effective interpersonal relations with other staff members, patients, and their families; communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

    The County of Ventura was formed January 1, 1873, when it separated from Santa Barbara County.  It is a general law county, governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, elected at-large for a staggered four year term in their respective districts, and the chairmanship rotates annually.  The Board of Supervisors is responsible for providing policy direction, approving the County budget, and representing the County in a number of areas including special districts.  The Board actions can apply countywide or only in unincorporated areas.

    Other County elected officials include the Auditor-Controller,  Assessor, Clerk/Recorder, District Attorney, Treasurer-Tax Collector, and Sheriff. The County Executive Officer advises, assists, and acts as an agent for the Board of Supervisors in all matters under the Board’s jurisdiction.
