    Position Description

    The City of Tacoma's Information Technology Department is currently recruiting for a dedicated and results-driven Senior Data Engineer (IT Analyst, Senior Technical, DA).

    This position serves a key role in the City’s transformation to using data as an asset, starting with our SAP S/4 ERP system. The senior data engineer will be part of an exciting, fast paced, citywide, multimillion-dollar analytics program. This individual will be part of shaping the future of analytics at the City of Tacoma. This position will report to the data engineering manager.

    A day in the life of the senior data engineer:
    • You serve as the City's lead data engineer for data integrations between separate, disparate systems as well as joining multiple datasets within a single complex system, like SAP S/4.
    • You assist the team with defining data standards for data modeling, data quality, metadata management, data organization, data storage, data movement and data security.
    • You collaborate with business users, architect, senior IT analysts, data stewards and business analysts to translate requirements into data design and solutions, especially dimensional models.
    • You lead the City's enterprise data integration efforts and facilitate the definition of the City's reference data architecture.
    • You lead city’s data pipelines & analytics solution design, development and implementation involving SAP technologies, FME, Snowflake and Tableau.
    • You review, recommend, and follow best practices and help to enforce best practices guidelines and standards for data lake governance and design.
    • Potentially lead other contractors and more junior engineers.


    Qualifications

    Equivalent combination to: Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field and five or more years directly related information technology work experience.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    Some positions may require a valid Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.

    Some positions may require incumbents to successful pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background check
    Positions assigned to the Tacoma Police Department may require additional background checks which may include fingerprinting and/or a polygraph test.

    Desired Experience:
    5+ years of leading data lake development and modeling in SAP S/4 HANA CDS views, ABAP development in Eclipse, 2+ years of RDMS systems and data lakes such as Snowflake/MS SQL/Oracle/Databricks/Microsoft Fabric/AWS redshift, etc. as developer and administrator. 2+ years of analytics tools such as Tableau/PowerBI/MicroStrategy, etc. as developer and administrator.

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Skill in analysis, problem solving and troubleshooting
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to lead individuals in analytics related project implementation and maintenance
    • Advanced knowledge of data lake development and modeling
    • Advanced knowledge of RDMS systems and data lakes such as Snowflake/MS SQL/Oracle/Databricks/Microsoft Fabric/AWS redshift, etc.
    • Knowledge of analytics tools such as Tableau, Power BI, MicroStrategy, etc.
    • Strong knowledge of relational databases and custom SQL skills
    • Strong business knowledge and understanding data warehousing related to large-scale ERP type systems, SAP HANA Studio, SAP Datasphere knowledge a plus
    • Working knowledge of ETL (extract, transform, load) methodologies and tools like FME/SNP Glue
    • Knowledge of data privacy, compliance, security role designs and RBAC implementation
    • Ability to address query performance and tunning issues
    • Working knowledge of Python a plus

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
