The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) is a senior executive within the Office of the State Controller (SCO), crucial in overseeing administrative, operational, and strategic functions. Reporting directly to the Chief of Staff/State Controller, the CAO provides leadership in financial management, information security, personnel administration, and policy development to ensure that SCO’s operations align with the Controller’s strategic objectives.
As a key member of the Executive Senior Management Team, the CAO has oversight of three critical divisions. The Administration and Disbursements Division manages financial planning, resource allocation, and budget administration. The Information Systems Division, including the Information Security Office, is responsible for technology governance and safeguarding financial data. The Personnel/Payroll Services Division, which includes the California State Payroll System (CSPS) project, ensures that the payroll operations for state employees are accurate, efficient, and compliant with state and federal mandates.
This position requires exceptional executive management skills, extensive policy expertise, and a strong commitment to public service. It offers an opportunity to shape statewide administrative strategies, influence high-level decision-making, and drive operational excellence within one of California’s most critical government agencies. The ideal candidate for this role is a seasoned executive leader with a robust background in state governance, financial oversight, human capital management, and legislative affairs, ready to assume one of the most influential administrative positions within the Office of the State Controller.
This role comes with a salary of $120,576 - $248,976 annually.
