The Missouri State Public Defender (MSPD) is seeking one or more dedicated and experienced attorney(s) with leadership experience and a commitment to public defense to serve as
Deputy Division Director. This position offers an opportunity to play a crucial role in ensuring quality legal representation, professional development, and efficient management within MSPD. Reporting directly to a Division Director, the Deputy Division Director(s) will assist in overseeing a group of district offices which may include a combination of trial and specialty practice offices, with specific assignments determined based on the skills and experience of the successful candidate(s). This role also involves supporting district management, and leading special projects that impact the public defense system. - Support District Offices: Assist in oversight of a designated group of MSPD district offices.
- Personnel Management & Development: Assist in hiring District Defenders and other personnel, coaching them in effective office leadership and professional development.
- Ensure Quality Representation: Help ensure clients receive high-quality representation by supporting district offices in training, supervision, and adherence to system policies.
- Policy & Resource Implementation: Assist in developing and implementing system policies and procedures to ensure effective resource utilization.
- Performance Oversight: Address personnel issues and performance concerns, working collaboratively with District Defenders, Human Resources, and the General Counsel.
- Fiscal Review: Assist in reviewing and approving litigation expenses, ensuring compliance with system policies and financial efficiency.
- Client & Court Relations: Serve as a liaison between district offices and courts, to foster communication and address client complaints.
- Promotion & Career Growth: Review recommendations for promotions and assist in performance improvement plans when necessary.
- Special Projects: Lead or assist with special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Division Director.
- Leadership & Integrity: Model client-centered advocacy, professional development, management courage, and integrity in all aspects of the role.
- Must be licensed to practice law in Missouri or eligible for immediate licensure.
- Extensive experience in criminal defense, preferably in public defense.
- Proven leadership and management experience, including mentoring and supervising attorneys.
- Strong understanding of public defense systems.
- Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills.
- Ability to travel frequently to district offices as needed.
