    CAREER DESCRIPTION

    UTILITY WORKER/DRIVER

    SALARY INFORMATION

    In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive a salary range increase on the following dates:

    Effective June 27, 2025 - 4.00% increase

    Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

    This recruitment is open to the public and is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future Utility Worker/Driver vacancies within the County of Orange. The current vacancies are with the OC Public Libraries. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower-level classifications.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    Utility Worker Drivers perform a combination of manual and clerical duties; to drive a light automotive vehicle to transport passengers and to pick up and deliver office supplies and other materials; to load and unload items from trucks; to move furniture and equipment; and to do other work as required.

    OC PUBLIC LIBRARIES (OCPL)

    OC Public Libraries is a network of community libraries located in your neighborhood or as near as your computer. Our 32 public branches in 24 cities and unincorporated areas of the County of Orange, as well as a branch for residents of Orangewood Children's Home provide library services to residents throughout the county. OC Public Libraries provides safe and easy access to libraries for the community, offers a broad spectrum of materials in multiple formats, provides the community with the best access to the collection, and delivers knowledgeable, friendly, and experienced staff to support the information needs of the community.     The OC Public Libraries Utility Worker/Driver's duties will include processing transiting materials using Automated Materials Handler; driving light trucks to deliver materials to branches; loading and unloading vehicles using hand truck and/or forklift; moving, assembling, and dismantling shelves, furniture and equipment, performing simple repairs and/or routine preventative maintenance on equipment.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

    In addition to the experience and training in the minimum qualifications, the successful candidate will possess at least six (6) months of experience driving a large mobile RV/Bus or Light Box Trucks.

    Technical Expertise
    • Maintenance and care of mobile RV/Bus or light box truck by maintaining vehicle logs, proper fueling, and performing walk through inspections to ensure onboarded equipment is stowed for travel.
    • Set up and tear down equipment such as exterior tables, chairs, and signage.
    • Use of hand truck and/or forklift
    • Perform simple repairs and maintenance on equipment.
    • Possess a good driving record and work independently.

    • Anticipating and meeting customer needs in all situations
    • Establishing productive and professional relationships with internal and external customers
    • Assist staff with checking in clients, making appointments, and provide general program information.


    Communication
    • Effectively able to exchange information accurately and concisely with others both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to interpret, apply and effectively follow oral and written instruction.
    • Comfortable communicating with members of the public in a variety of situations displaying social skill, awareness, and tact.


    License Required

    Possession of a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher is required by date of appointment. Some positions may require a Class two (2) license.

    PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

    Incumbents must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds; vision sufficient to be able to read maps and street signs; physically able to climb stairs; be able to drive a County approved vehicle in different weather conditions; and performing duties such as moving heavy equipment or furniture.

    Recruitment Process

    OCCR Human Resources screens all applications to identify the most qualified candidates for the position based on the skills required to meet the needs of the Department. After the initial screening, the qualified candidates will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the competition.

    Online Exam | Multiple-Choice (Weighted 100%)

    An online exam consisting of job-related questions will be administered. Candidates who pass this exam will be placed on the eligible list.

    Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedure above may be modified. Candidates will be notified of any changes in the process via email.

    Eligible List

    Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
