    The City of Menlo Park is accepting applications for the positions of Library Assistant I and II in the Library and Community Services Department. Interested and qualified candidates should apply now.

    The Menlo Park Library and Community Services department values customer service, community engagement, and professionalism. The City of Menlo Park recently opened the Belle Haven Community Campus, a state-of-the-art facility that houses a community center, gymnasium, aquatics center, senior center, youth center, and branch library.

    Under immediate supervision, a Library Assistant I provides customer services support for library operations and programs including circulation, collections, branch library, and program support; provides direct service and assistance to library patrons; and performs related work as required.

    A Library Assistant II provides the above performance under general supervision, and tasks given to the Library Assistant II will be more varied and complex, including technical services and specialized library functionality.

    Ideal Candidate

    The ideal candidate will:
    • Perform clerical and customer service tasks related to circulation, collections, technical services, and/or program support in a public library with outstanding accuracy, thoroughness, and professionalism.
    • Work effectively and collaboratively with other team members to perform at high levels that meet performance goals and measurements
    • Manage time and workload in a fast-paced environment; meet multiple deadlines; use modern technological tools to improve work output; achieve performance goals and results in collaboration with others; contribute to and implement team-oriented projects and tasks
    • Flexibility and adaptability. Use a positive, problem-solving approach to unexpected situations. Perform at a high level to adapt to changing environments. Innovate and apply creative thinking to develop new pathways to achieve goals. Respond effectively in crisis situations
    • Provide administrative support, conduct research, perform special projects, develop reports, assemble materials, compose documents, retrieve and research information, update databases and compile statistics
    • Possess strong teamwork skills to function effectively with a diverse and talented team of program assistants, supervisors and other support staff responsible for program implementation
    • Plan, organize, schedule, and support assigned programs and projects to deliver high-quality community services to the public
    • Ensure the provision of a safe and healthy work and play environment; participate in training staff in safety measures; observe program activities and compliance with safety requirements
    • Communicate effectively. Maintain excellent communication with program participants; explain and enforce policies and procedures; promote awareness of programs to prospective participants; celebrate success internally and in the community
    • Support supervisory and management personnel in both administrative and coordination efforts of programs and services in a fast-paced environment that is focused on responding to the changing service needs of a dynamic community
    • This position may be assigned to provide effective technical and functional direction to staff, interns, and/or volunteers


    Minimum Qualifications

    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

    Library Assistant I
    • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade
    • Two years of office clerical or customer service experience or one year of experience working in a library

    Library Assistant II
    • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade
    • Three years of experience performing circulation, collections, technical services, and/or program support in a library


    Physical Demands
    Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to perform assigned duties, as well as push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift and carry materials and objects up to 25 pounds and push and pull materials and objects up to 75 pounds with the use of proper equipment.

    Benefits

    Library Assistant I: $61,876 to $75,210 Annually
    Library Assistant II: $66,295 to $80,582 Annually

    • Vacation: 88 - 176 hours of vacation leave accrual each year, depending on length of service
    • Sick Leave: 96 hours of sick leave accrued each year
    • Holidays: 11 official holidays; 34 hours of floating holiday time per year; 8 “Day of Reflection” hours per year in recognition of holidays of individual and community importance
    • Retirement: CalPERS: For classic members 2.0% @ 60 formula. For all others, 2.0% @ 62 formula
    • Deferred Compensation: Voluntary participation in City Plans.
    • Life Insurance: City-paid policy equal to 1.5 times regular annual wage
    • Long Term Disability: City-paid coverage
    • Educational leave and tuition reimbursement
    • A City-paid Caltrain GoPass. The Menlo Park campus is centrally located within walking distance from Caltrain and downtown Menlo Park.
    • A City-paid BayPass. This pilot program offers employees unlimited travel for both work and personal trips on 25 Bay Area transit agencies that use the Clipper card.
    • A transportation allowance program provides employees with $1.50 per day when they walk, bicycle or carpool to work at least once per week.
    • Employees are provided with access to an on-site gym at no cost

    Menlo Park was founded November 23, 1927, as a general law city under the State of California and operates under the council-manager form of government.     City Council


    The City Council is the City's five-member governing body whose members serve at-large for four-year overlapping terms in general municipal elections. The City Council selects from among its members, the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem to one-year terms at its first meeting in December of each year. The Mayor, who represents the City of Menlo Park, serves as the presiding officer of the City Council and signs enacting ordinances and contracts. The Menlo Park City Council meetings are generally Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the City Council Chambers located at 701 Laurel Street.
