GENERAL DESCRIPTION :
As part of the Watershed Conservation Team, the Healthy Creeks Initiative (HCI) works to manage invasive aquatic and riparian plants to enhance habitat for imperiled fish and other wildlife. Under the direction of the Watershed Conservation Team Leader and other department biologists, interns may work and travel independently or with a team to conduct sampling, lab work, surveys, and outreach related to early detection and management of invasive and aquatic riparian plants. Position will be based out of San Marcos but will conduct fieldwork across the HCI counties, primarily within the Edwards Plateau ecoregion; substantial travel is required during this time. Contacts landowners and obtains landowner permission forms for Arundo donax treatments as part of the HCI outreach. Assists volunteers with mapping within the HCI project area. Participates in a variety of outreach and management activities at locations around the state, including public outreach, landowner outreach, kayak or boat-based invasive plant surveys and herbicide treatments, and riparian plant surveys/mapping, as well as entry of PDMP spray sheets. Represents the department in a professional manner. Operates vehicles - drivers license required upon hire. May operate other fisheries sampling equipment. Performs data entry on a routine basis to assist with project organization. May prepare maps and have the opportunity to receive basic training and experience in ArcGIS. Performs basic maintenance checks and cares for and organizes team equipment. Prepares and submits routine administrative paperwork. Works outside frequently in hot, remote, sunny conditions and adheres to all safety procedures. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.
NOTE 1: Selected applicants will have the opportunity to travel and work in unique Hill County riverine environments, learning survey protocols and land management strategies from professional conservation biologists.
NOTE 2: Position involves physically demanding labor in harsh climatic conditions, remote locations, and difficult terrain. Selected candidates must be able to work safely under strenuous conditions.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education :
Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months;
Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application;
Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.
Experience :

Licensure :
Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Education :
Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Biology, Ecology, Fisheries, Aquatic Ecology, Wildlife Biology, or other Natural Science.
Experience :
Experience collecting biological data using handheld devices and GIS applications;
Experience following procedures carefully while working independently;
Experience communicating with audiences about environmental or biological topics;
Experience conducting vegetation surveys;
Experience operating a truck towing a trailer;
Experience maintaining equipment and inventory.
Licensure :
Basic CPR/First Aid or Wilderness First Aid.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
