    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    PLEASE NOTE:

    READ - IMPORTANT TRANSCRIPT REQUIREMENT:

    A copy of a current college transcript, ISSUED FROM THE REGISTRAR with a signature and/or school watermark, must be attached to the application at time of submission. The transcript must show current GPA, credits, and current enrollment or recent graduation date.

    DEGREE PLANS OR GRADES FROM A STUDENT SELF-SERVICE PORTAL WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Omission of a transcript will be the basis for disqualification.

    International degrees must be accompanied with an evaluation of the comparable academic qualification. There are several associations related to degree evaluations that can be contacted to obtain the required documentation (i.e. Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE) or the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), etc.).

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

    Marine Enhancement internship positions will, under the supervision of the Hatchery Manager, be responsible for fish hatchery stock enhancement. Assists Hatchery staff in the propagation and distribution of marine finfish throughout the coastal waters of Texas. Duties include collecting, tabulating, and entry of hatchery records; fish culture operations; and stock enhancement program work. Operates equipment safely under close supervision and maintains gear, equipment, and facility. Perform additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures. Normal work hours are weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with some work in the evenings or weekends with 40-hour weeks.

    NOTE: Due to the rural location of the facility, on-site housing (RV camper) is provided for the duration of the internship with no monthly deduction. Must adhere to property rules of conduct.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months.

    Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application.

    Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.

    Experience :

    None required.

    Licensure :

    Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree relevant to the position; examples are majors in Marine Biology/Marine Science, Fisheries Biology, Biology, Wildlife and Fisheries Science, Oceanography, Environmental Science, and Natural Resource Management.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

    Skill in using personal computers.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in interacting with the public in a courteous and professional manner.

    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts.

    Skill in making independent, sound, and timely decisions.

    Ability to learn to identify common marine finfish.

    Ability to handle marine organisms.

    Ability to collect and record data.

    Ability to fully participate in field and water-based sampling activities.

    Ability to accurately follow instructions.

    Ability to work as a member of a team.

    Ability to maintain facilities and equipment.

    Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting equipment and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Due to rural location of facility, on-site housing (RV camper) is provided for the duration of the internship with no monthly deduction. Must adhere to property rules of conduct.

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes flexible schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays;

    Required to adjust to changing schedules.

    Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures.

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

    Required to perform work with proper safety precautions and equipment in enclosed spaces, heights, noise, dust and fumes.

    Required to perform manual labor, including lifting equipment and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
