    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    PLEASE NOTE:

    READ - IMPORTANT TRANSCRIPT REQUIREMENT:

    International degrees must be accompanied with an evaluation of the comparable academic qualification.     PHYSICAL WORK ADDRESS: WL - Landscape Ecology Program, 4200 Smith School Rd, Austin, Texas 78744

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

    The GIS Analysis Intern will provide support to the Landscape Ecology Program. This position works closely with senior GIS specialists to aid in processing and analyzing remote sensing and GIS data to support the Texas Ecological Mapping Systems Project. Key responsibilities include GIS or remote-sensing analysis, data processing, editing, and updating geospatial datasets. The intern may also contribute to field-based ecological surveys, collecting and verifying geospatial data using GPS, remote-sensing technologies, and mobile data collection systems. Work is performed under supervision with opportunities for independent judgment and initiative. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in GIS analysis, and ecological fieldwork while supporting conservation initiatives. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise and enthusiasm in spatial analysis, GIS data development and editing.     Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education :

    Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months.

    Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application.

    Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.

    Experience :

    None required.

    Licensure :

    Must possess a valid State Driver's license.

    NOTE : Retention of internship contingent upon maintaining required license.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education :

    Currently enrolled as a graduate student at an accredited college or university, or have graduated with a Bachelor's degree within the past six months. Preferred degree programs include; geography, GIS, remote-sensing, environmental sciences, biology, ecology, or a conservation science related field.

    Experience :

    Experience with GIS or remote-sensing software and principles.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of GIS or remote-sensing principles.

    Knowledge of ArcGIS software and related products.

    Knowledge of spatial analysis, GIS data development and editing, cartography, and map production.

    Knowledge of aerial imagery, Lidar, remote sensing, GPS technologies.

    Knowledge of landcover classification.

    Knowledge of Texas' habitats and ecosystems.

    Skill in data and file organization.

    Skill in MS office software.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in operating GIS/GPS systems and other mobile applications.

    Skill in collecting or analyzing data.

    Ability to think spatially and creatively.

    Ability to pay attention to detail.

    Ability to view and interpret aerial or satellite imagery.

    Ability to follow and understand directions.

    Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and improve workflows.

    Ability to read and understand maps.

    Ability to work as part of a team.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    Required to work on holidays, weekends, and hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as necessary.

    Required to travel 10% with possible overnight stays.

    Must conform to TPWD Safety policies and procedures.

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
