    Love swimming and want to work in a fun, interactive environment? We are looking for Pool Managers to join our team!

    We are currently hiring for our summer programing. The position is seasonal working up to 40 hours per week. The anticipated start date is May 31, 2025.

    Here are the details about the positions:

    • Available Positions: 4
    • Hourly Rate: $28.21/hour - $38.08/hour
    • Work Schedule: Sunday - Saturday, up to 40 hours/week
    • Work hours: Between the hours of 5:30AM - 9:00PM
    • Part-Time, Seasonal, Hourly, Non-Exempt Position
    • Work Location: We operate multiple pools within the district. Work location will be assigned after you are hired.
    • Anticipated Start Date: May 31, 2025
    • Duration: Summer season will run from May 31 to August 22
    • Not to exceed 960 hours per fiscal year. (July 1 - June 30)

    POSITION SUMMARY

    Under general supervision from the Recreation Supervisor, provides leadership and program responsibility in all operations at assigned facilities including swim lessons, recreational swim, water safety classes, aquatics summer camps, and staff development.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    Receives direct or general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises general supervision and provides training to other staff.

    This is the advanced journey-level classification in the Lifeguard classification series responsible for providing lead direction and training to lower-level staff and for ensuring that the District’s aquatics facilities are maintained in a safe and effective working condition. This classification is distinguished from the Senior Water Safety Instructor by the assignment of more complex tasks requiring a greater level of technical and specialized knowledge and a higher degree of independent judgment, including serving in a lead capacity over lower level staff.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Incumbents may not perform all duties. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
    • All duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, Head Lifeguard, and Senior Water Safety Instructor
    • Plans, leads, assigns, directs, and participates in the work of staff responsible for performing lifeguard duties at the District’s aquatics facilities; assigns lifeguard staff to daily rotation schedules, ensuring proper coverage at all times
    • Receives and responds to questions, concerns, and complaints from patrons; determines issues and resolves or refers to Aquatics Program Leader III or Aquatics Supervisor as appropriate
    • Assists in leading training sessions, including safety drills and other emergency procedures; ensures that lifeguard and water safety instructor staff attend required trainings and maintains records
    • Provides aquatic safety and supervision for patrons; monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of District aquatics facilities to prevent accidents and to ensure the safety and well-being of patrons
    • Implements and monitors District policies and procedures; enforces aquatics regulations; cautions patrons regarding unsafe activities
    • Monitors facility use; ensures that the facility is opened, closed, and secured in compliance with District practices and procedures and that the pool and restrooms are maintained in a safe, neat, and clean condition
    • Inspects and maintains swimming and pool equipment for functionality; ensures proper placement and availability in the pool area; recommends maintenance and repair as needed
    • Maintains records of participation and completes required reports
    • Performs other duties as assigned


    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this position. The functions of this position are primarily performed in outdoor locations as part of a team. The setting includes various weather conditions, including heat and sunshine. Incumbents must wear an appropriate uniform with identification and protective equipment. The environment requires working in and around water as well as slippery and/or wet surfaces. Specialized aspects of the work environment may also include high noise levels, working with participants who are using potentially dangerous sports equipment, and risk of exposure to pool water treatment chemicals and cleaning agents. Incumbents may be assigned an irregular working schedule including weekends, early mornings, evenings and holidays and may have to travel between various locations.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have: hearing and speech adequate to communicate in person, by telephone, by PA system and by radio, and to speak loudly in a noisy setting; vision adequate to clearly distinguish objects and persons at a distance and to identify signs of swimmer distress; bodily movement adequate to frequently sit, stand, walk, run, jump, climb, swim, dive, reach, turn, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crawl, and push/pull; ability to raise arms above shoulder height; manual dexterity adequate to grasp objects, use fine manipulation, write and operate office machines and equipment; strength and endurance to safely swim 300 yards, perform lifting and carrying of items/persons up to 50 pounds, and work outdoors in the sun for prolonged periods of time.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    Ability and Skill to:
    • Assign aquatics staff to daily rotation schedule, ensuring proper coverage to ensure the safety of patrons and staff
    • Effectively provide staff leadership and work direction
    • Assist with training
    • Monitor and enforce relevant law, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
    • Administer first aid, CPR, and AED as needed
    • Maintain order and safety in a crowded and noisy environment
    • Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner
    • Perform work in an efficient, effective, safe, and timely manner
    • Demonstrate strong customer service skills and establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships
    • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments
    • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing

    Knowledge of:
    • Principles of leadership in an aquatic environment
    • Principles and techniques of all lifeguarding and learn to swim instruction
    • Organization and operation of the aquatic facilities, including maintenance, occupational hazards, and standard safety practices
    • Techniques for effectively dealing with individuals of various ages, various socio-economic and ethnic groups, and effectively representing the District in contacts with the public
    • Relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
    • Operational characteristics of water rescue safety equipment and devices
    • Principles and practices for providing high level of customer service
    • Principles and practices of recordkeeping
    • Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work

    Education/Experience/Training:
    • Two years of experience as a certified lifeguard or equivalent work in aquatics, leadership work experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the job
    • Must possess current certificates in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, as well as standard First Aid, and must maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of continued employment
    • Must possess a current Water Safety Instructor certificate
    • Possession of instructor level certification in Lifeguarding or Water Safety highly desirable
    • Any combination of experience, training and/or education that provided the required knowledge, skills and abilities of the class is acceptable

    Special Requirements:
    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • If 18 years of age and still in high school, must possess a valid work permit
    • If 18 years of age or older, must pass a fingerprint and/or background clearance prior to employment
    • Completion of the Hepatitis B vaccination series is recommended
    • Completion of Tuberculosis (TB) test required
    • Verification of ID and ability work in the USA

    A Brief History
    The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, known locally as “H.A.R.D.," is an independent special use district created to provide park and recreation services for over 309,000 residents. Our boundaries encompass a 100 square-mile area, which includes the City of Hayward and the unincorporated communities of Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Ashland, Cherryland, and Fairview.

    In 1944, representatives of the City of Hayward, various school districts, and local civic organizations developed a proposal for establishment of the Hayward Area Recreation and Parkway District. When an initiative was placed on the November 7th ballot, the residents voted overwhelmingly for the creation of the District, which was officially formed on December 11, 1944. In 1958, the District changed its name to the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, and has become the largest recreation district in the State of California.

    Since its creation, the District has provided residents with many beautiful facilities and parks, many of which have received national and state recognition for their design, innovation and beauty, as well as hundreds of educational and recreational classes and programs.
