    The Department Services Aide - Transportation Dispatcher position dispatches transportation services for older adults.

    The current vacancy is in the Community and Library Services Department Incumbent must be available to work a varied work schedule, including occasional weekends and holidays.

    The ideal candidate must possess the following :

    This is a Non-Perm, Part-Time position.

    Temporary/part-time employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1 - June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7½% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice. Further restrictions apply to CalPERS retired annuitants. This is a Part-Time position.

    Examples of Essential Duties

    The Senior Services Aide (Transportation Dispatcher):
    • Delivers demand responsive transportation services to ensure timely, efficient and safe customer service.
    • Dispatches staff and volunteer drivers who transport seniors to medical and non-medical appointments.
    • Assists the Transportation Coordinator in maintaining the database of senior clients; training volunteers and new employees; and providing clerical and telephone support
    • Promotes the observation of safe work practices at all times.
    • Investigates complaints, and completes necessary reports.
    • Performs related duties as assigned including record keeping, preparing periodic reports, scheduling for special events and assisting in outreach efforts.
    • Driving in a City vehicle will be required.
    Note: The preceding functions have been provided as examples of the types of work performed by employees assigned to this job classification. The City at its discretion, may add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge of : Transportation and customer service needs unique to older adults and families; standard office principles and procedures; personal computer and standard business software.

    Ability to : Communicate effectively with older adults, families and professionals; work closely with staff in a team environment; maintain effective relationships with clients; assess and support clients' efforts in working towards the accomplishment of mutually agreed upon goals.

    Education and Experience:

    The ideal candidate will have: High school diploma or equivalent, with experience and/or education in Social/Human services, Sociology, Gerontology or other behavioral sciences.Three years of experience working with older adults.Fluency in Spanish, preferred. Certifications/License : Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license. Employees regularly assigned/required to drive a city or personal vehicle in the course and scope of work shall be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull Notice program due to the performance of field duties that may require operation of a City vehicle.

    CPR/First Aid Certificates must be obtained within three months of appointment.

    • Other background reports may also be conducted depending on the position.
    • Upon hire, employee is subject to further reporting from DOJ via subsequent arrest notification.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS
    Public Employee Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, all Huntington Beach city employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.

    The SALARY RANGE is composed of seven steps. Merit step increases are based on satisfactory performance.

    PROMOTIONS within the City are based upon the merit system principles emphasizing individual ability and utilizing competitive examinations.

In addition, Orange Coast College; the University of California, Irvine; and California State Universities at Long Beach and Fullerton are located in close proximity.

    There are over 117,000 households within a five-mile radius of the Huntington Beach Civic Center. The average family household income is $122,851, ranking one of the highest in the nation based on the top 100 largest cities in the country.

    THE CITY GOVERNMENT

    Founded in the late 1880s, Huntington Beach was incorporated as a Charter City in 1909. Huntington Beach has a City Council/ City Manager form of government. The City Council has seven members who are elected at large, on a non-partisan basis, to four-year overlapping terms. City Council members are limited to two consecutive 4-year terms. There are three elected department heads - the City Attorney, City Clerk and City Treasurer. The position of Mayor is filled on a rotating basis.
