The City of Irvine seeks three (3) collaborative and innovative professionals to take a key supervisory role in the development of Irvine's new, locally operated and world class public library system. The Senior Librarians will serve the Principal Librarian, building upon established community connections and provide organizational leadership to strategically support the development of a phenomenal municipal library operation. Please note that this position will require occasional evening and weekend shifts.

We currently have three (3) vacancies for this position. The three (3) vacancies are: Senior Librarian - Community Engagement, Youth ServicesThis position has functional responsibility for the operations of the Youth Services team system-wide and daily oversight of a library branch.
Senior Librarian - Community Engagement, Adult ServicesThis position has functional responsibility for the operations of the Adult Services team system-wide and daily oversight of a library branch.
Senior Librarian - Customer Experience, Borrower ServicesThis position has functional responsibility for the operations of the Borrower Services team system-wide and daily oversight of a library branch.
Your Impact
The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all- inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates community library programs and operations. Monitors the quality of services provided. Develops, recommends, and implements long-range goals, objectives, and policies relevant to the assigned program area. Prepares new program proposals and evaluates and recommends improvements or replacement of existing programs and services.
- Supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of staff and volunteers. Assumes responsibility for recommending a variety of personnel actions in areas such as performance evaluations, training, selection, and disciplinary measures. Monitors and reviews work, providing technical assistance and guidance.
- Participates in the review, selection, and procurement of library and informational materials in all formats (e.g. print, electronic, and digital). Performs specialized reading and research to maintain knowledge of current practices and trends.
- Supervises, plans, and oversees the classification and cataloging of library materials; maintains automated information systems, such as the library's integrated system and patron database, and other electronic resources. Applies knowledge of current technology to enhance and upgrade service delivery.
- Organizes, coordinates and administers a large and varied volunteer program for all service areas and programs of library services. Performs daily coordination of volunteer assignments; determines daily schedules of volunteers and makes revisions continuously, as needs dictate. Recruits and trains volunteers. Assists affiliated non-profit organizations, and other entities in meeting their volunteer objectives.
- Communicates with staff and community to provide information regarding events, classes, services, and resources. Responds to complex and difficult suggestions, requests, concerns, and sensitive inquiries from library customers with tact and professionalism. Develops and monitors customer service standards and service delivery.
- Acts as primary public contact person for assigned location. Interacts with City officials, staff, and other individuals and community groups. Advises groups and individuals regarding policies and procedures.
- Prepares and gives public presentations. Represents the City in meetings with community groups, other agencies and professional organizations. Serves on task forces/committees as required.
- Assists in library and departmental public relations and outreach activities. Coordinates with library support groups, volunteer and other entities in fundraising activities; coordinates tours, events and activities with schools, civic and community groups.
- Develops, administers, and monitors assigned work unit budget. Participates in developing overall section and department budget. Oversees the assessment and collection of fees. Researches, develops, and implements alternative funding sources such as grants, sponsorships, donations, and fundraising activities. Maintains budget-related records.
- Supervises branch operations including building maintenance, and preparation required for program and group use. Ensures building, equipment, and amenities are in working order and supplies are adequate. Arranges custodial, maintenance, rehabilitation, and repair work. Recommends and implements equipment replacement.
- Develops comprehensive marketing strategies for program areas. Coordinates the library's web and social media presence; works with other City entities to maintain a positive and effective presence in the virtual community.
- Prepares and approves a variety of correspondence, reports and statistical information such as incident reports, purchasing requisitions and authorizations, and statistical reports. May design forms and reports regarding library activities and operations.
- Maintains knowledge of community needs and trends. Develops, implements, and evaluates programs and services to address those needs. Offers innovative approaches to providing library services and allocates staff and resources according to priorities.
- Recommends procedures consistent with departmental directives, City policies and regulations. Ensures appropriate policies and procedures are followed by staff and library users.
- Acts on behalf of the Principal Librarian in their absence.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of increasingly responsible experience in library supervision or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
- Ability to possess or obtain First Aid and CPR certification within three months of employment required.
- Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association-accredited program is highly desirable.
- Ability to exert very moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, carrying, pushing and pulling.
