The City of Ventura is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Aide (Extra-Help) to join our Business Intelligence/GIS team in the Information Technology Department. This part-time, extra-help position offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools and techniques in a real-world municipal environment. You will collaborate with GIS professionals and city staff to assist with data management, analysis, and mapping to support various city operations and GIS-related projects.
This part-time, extra-help position will work approximately 16hours per week with a flexible schedule. This temporary assignment is anticipated to last approximately three months. However, it may be extended or shortened at the discretion of the department .
What You’ll Do:
• Utility Easement Mapping: Help map and integrate utility easements based on tract maps, legal documents, and other resources into the City’s GIS database.
• GIS Data Review: Review GIS datasets for classification, completeness, and spatial accuracy. Identify discrepancies and assist in correcting errors to ensure data meets established standards.
• Data Input and Maintenance: Help enter and update GIS data according to city infrastructure projects and planning standards.
• Spatial Analysis & Mapping: Conduct basic spatial analysis, create maps, and assist with data visualization tasks that support decision-making and planning within various City departments.
• Documentation: Support the documentation of workflows, data management processes, and GIS project details to ensure that information is organized and up-to-date.
• Web Mapping & Dashboards: Create web maps and dashboards using ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise to share geospatial data with relevant stakeholders.
• Training and Learning: Participate in training sessions to learn GIS methodologies and best practices.
Experience and Qualifications for Success!
A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the completion of high school, supplemented by college-level courses in mathematics, surveying, drafting, or a related field, is required. Candidates should also have coursework or experience in Geography, urban planning, Computer Science, or Engineering, with a focus on GIS applications.
The ideal candidate will possess practical knowledge of basic GIS concepts, GIS software (ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online), and geospatial data types. Experience with data entry, editing, classification, and accuracy review for geospatial data is highly desirable.
