Job Summary Salary: $15.00 The City of Orlando is seeking college/university students (graduate level preferred but not required) to work on various initiatives currently underway in the City Planning Division. This is the perfect opportunity for students to learn more about the role of urban planning from the governmental perspective and to gain practical knowledge as they further refine their career path.
Internships will run for approximately 6-12 weeks, between 15-20 hours per week on-site with an expected start date in early June. Aside from standard office hours, interns should also expect to take part in evening and/or weekend neighborhood and community meetings. Interns will be paid at a rate of $15 per hour.
Students in the following programs are encouraged to apply: Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Historic Preservation and Public Administration.
Examples of DutiesThe internship topic area is land use planningfocused.
Past projects have included:
- Creating a photographic inventory of urban design concepts
- Drafting website language for City Planning projects
- Using GIS to prepare maps of neighborhood study areas
- Evaluating development patterns to identify trends in various parts of the City
- Tracking and comparing job and housing growth in various metro areas
- Evaluating innovative community engagement techniques and evaluating past development successes and pitfalls.
Minimum RequirementsCurrently pursuing a degree with a declared major in Public Administration, Urban/Regional Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Historic Preservation or a relevant field required. Ideal candidates should have strong organizational skills, an ability to work independently to meet deadlines and be able to convey information clearly both orally and in writing. Experience with Sketchup, Microsoft Office Suite and GIS is encouraged.
THIS IS A PART_TIME_POSITION WITH NO GUARANTEE OF A CERTAIN NUMBER OF HOURS AND NO BENEFITS. THIS POSITION INVOLVES WORKING ON A TEMP/SEASONAL CONTRACT WHICH CAN BE RENEWED ANNUALLY BASED ON PERFORMANCE AND BUSINESS NEEED. - Nine (9) years of direct experience for a doctoral degree.
