The County of San Luis Obispo (SLO) is located along the Pacific Ocean in spectacular Central California, between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. With a population of just over 280,000, the County is known and loved for its natural beauty, mild climate, and agricultural heritage. The San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District (the District) is the local agency tasked with promoting and preserving optimum air quality in its jurisdiction, which covers the entire County including the Carrizo Plains to the east. The District Board of Directors consists of twelve members: five County Supervisors and one City Council representative from each of the seven incorporated cities. The Board is the decision-making body for the District and is responsible for adopting rules, setting policies, and providing direction on important air quality issues impacting the County.
The Air Pollution Control Officer (APCO) functions as an Executive Director of the District. Given unique statutory authority, the APCO works at the direction of the Board of Directors to accomplish the legislative mandate of the District to attain ambient air quality standards within the County. The District is seeking an organized, collaborative, and solution-oriented person with strong leadership and communication skills. The new APCO will have a strong commitment to the District’s mission of improving air quality and public health, and must have passion and aptitude for this demanding role. The individual selected will be a unifying mentor and team builder who manages staff fairly. A diplomatic, proactive, and responsive listener; this person will also be capable of fostering an inclusive culture that is characterized by high standards, effective communication, and trust.
Salary is negotiable based on experience; commensurate with the range of compensation provided by comparable agencies. The current APCO’s salary is $244,000. The District also offers an attractive benefits package. If you are interested in this outstanding opportunity, please visit our website at www.bobmurrayassoc.com to apply online.
