This position provides an opportunity for working in the City of Orlando’s Office of Sustainability, Resilience, and Future-Ready. The position will assist in the creation of a composting and food waste reduction pilot program in support of the city’s sustainability goals.

The City was recently notified of a USDA Composting and Food Waste Reduction grant to purchase and install a solar-powered static aerated composting, rainwater harvesting, and education facility in the Parramore neighborhood of Orlando with a second location to be announced. This role will assist with the installation and operation of the first facility in an urban farm; develop educational materials engaging with residents and community organizations to encourage adoption of composting, respond to community members’ questions and feedback and ensure that food waste is not contaminated by non-organic matter. Additionally, this role will aid in locating satellite food waste drop-off locations within the community and utilizing community feedback in the siting, planning, and operating of the second installation.

Duties for this position include, but are not limited to attending an initial orientation and 40-hour training; conducting community education, outreach, and evaluation activities; assisting in physically installing and operating community composting facilities (such as turning over pile with a pitchfork and checking moisture and temperature levels) and rainwater collection systems; picking up and accepting buckets of food waste; distributing finished compost to residents for use in home gardens; tracking deliverables; and collaborating with Initiative Manager on compilation of one-year evaluation, grantor reports, and final report.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Initiative Manager, and is reviewed through direct observation, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Skills to be gained include the following:

Must meet physical and environmental demands of working outdoors in all weather conditions for most of the day; exposure to insects; and performing demanding physical labor. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Valid Florida driver’s license is required.
