Why you’ll love this position:This is a mid-level supervisory position for a Recreational/Music Therapist Supervisor working with a interdisciplinary team serving individuals who have been court ordered to the Department of Mental Health for inpatient psychiatric treatment with the goal of restoring the individuals’ competency to proceed in their legal case. This position is accountable for planning, developing, directing, and coordinating the recreational, music and art therapy services designed to meet individual and group needs. Consults with staff from other disciplines to integrate recreation, music, and art therapies into the overall treatment program; monitors activities to ensure conformance to patient and program objectives. Supervises professional and vocational level positions. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations, training, planning and assigning work, performance assessment, coaching and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skill to perform and review the work overseen.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Successful or higher on most recent performance appraisal. No disciplinary action in the previous 12 months. Employee must be current in mandatory training requirements and department job-specific competencies. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 1. Performs advanced clinical therapy through recreation, music, and/or art therapy.
2. Develops a plan of care for Rehabilitation Services; documents and reports patients’ progress and continuing needs; assesses patients’ needs and evaluates responses; modifies interventions as necessary.
3. Plans, organizes, and implements Rehabilitation Services involving various modalities including group and individual contacts and competency restoration services.
4. Participates in Treatment Team meetings, other meetings as assigned with medical and professional staff concerning designing or modifying individual and/or group treatment plans.
5. Displays clinical knowledge and competence in group dynamics, behavior management, counseling techniques and adaptive techniques.
6. Supervises and mentors assigned Rehab staff including Recreational, Music and Art Therapist and Therapeutic Services workers.
7. Maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies used for programming needs, requisitions materials.
8. Exercises considerable independence and discretion in carrying out assignments in conformance with program objectives and professional standards; receives general supervision through progress reports, conferences, trainings and observation.
9. Performs other related work as assigned.

KEY SKILLS: - 1. Intermediate knowledge of the principles and practices of recreational/music/art therapy and the ability to apply them.
2. Intermediate knowledge of the techniques, methods, and goals of individual and group therapy.
3. Intermediate knowledge of the problems and behaviors of persons with mental, developmental, cognitive, social, and physical challenges.
4. Ability to assess the therapeutic techniques and adapt treatment to individual and group needs.
5. Ability to plan, supervise, and participate in therapeutic recreational activities.
6. Ability to observe patients’ progress and prepare clear and concise reports.
7. Ability to identify problems, develops solutions, and makes recommendations for corrective action and follows up, when needed.
8. Ability to teach the principles, practices, and techniques of recreational/music therapy to staff, students, and volunteers.
9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and patients.
10. Ability to supervise staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)
Two or more years of experience as a Recreational Therapist I/ Music Therapist I with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.
OR
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation, Music or Art Therapy.
Two or more years of professional experience as a Recreation, Music, or Art Therapist.
OR
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Recreation, Music Therapy, Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies, Art Therapy, or a closely related field; and , t hree or more years of professional experience in therapeutic recreation, music therapy, or art therapy.
