    Job Summary

    The Graduate Education Advisor will work across campus with the Graduate Coordinators, College Advising Centers, The Office of the Registrar, and other student support offices to be the primary campus resource for comprehensive and individualized graduate student advising. The incumbent must maintain effective working relationships with graduate students and faculty from all six colleges and work collaboratively with Associate Deans, and Graduate Coordinators.

    Graduate Education’s goal is to achieve excellence in graduate programs which place graduates into the workforce with advanced knowledge and the leadership skills necessary to prosper in an increasingly competitive global economy. The Graduate Education Office provides strategic leadership and day-to-day management services to support and administer over 30 graduate programs across the Cal Poly campus. Graduate Education strives to inspire students by encouraging innovation and excellence in their educational and professional career objectives.

    Key Qualifications
    • General knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends of the Student Services field.
    • Ability to accurately assess the current and future academic needs of students in the areas of academic support, leadership, career development, service, interpersonal skills, and diversity awareness.
    • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters, including blended students, eligibility requirements; ability to be sensitive to individuals and groups; keen insight and understanding of cause and effect relationships that exist on campus.

    Education and Experience
    • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.
    • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for position with a major responsibility for a professional career or personal counseling.


    Salary and Benefits

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $66,480 - $77,952 annually

    Classification Range: $66,480 - $94,716 annually
