    What You'll Be Doing

    If you are a problem-solver with a passion for technology Wake County IT Department has an exciting opportunity for you to join us as a Systems Administrator - Business Systems!

    The Wake County IT Department serves the public by providing innovative, reliable and responsible technology solutions. The department is the primary technology provider for County departments. IT operates centrally managed operations and administration for enterprise, public safety and mission-critical systems, desktop and mobile services, network and telephone services, software development and management and technical support and consultation to County departments and business partners.

    Essential Functions:
    • Serves as a principal point of contact and liaison supporting Wake County Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
    • Provide customer consultation research and support for the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) Hardware to include recommending appropriate equipment and solutions to meet the customer’s applications business requirements
    • Install, test and support all aspects of network connectivity for the endpoint devices, NetMotion & Cisco AnyConnect endpoint related VPN applications
    • Provide procurement, set up and training support on hardware to end users and other support staff
    • Work in partnership with external IT vendors for application upgrades, enhancements, troubleshooting issues, etc.
    • Create, complete, test and maintain complex system images for Wake County EMS & public safety
    • Work in partnership with the technical engineers at the Raleigh-Wake 911 Center for the management of the Wake County CAD Inquiry units
    • Work in partnership with external IT vendors for application upgrades, enhancements, troubleshooting issues, etc.
    • Coordinate and manage the 24x7x365 endpoint device support for various public safety applications
    • Install, test and support all aspects of network connectivity for the endpoint devices and NetMotion endpoint related software
    • Provide support printers, scanners, peripherals and related hardware at all Wake County public safety facilities
    • Perform routine technology refreshes on all supported hardware and applications for your assigned customers

      NOTE: Additional Requirements: Position is subject to 24-hour on call requirement. A valid driver license and a safe driving record are required. Position requires occasional overtime.

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • Associates degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or a related field
    • Three years of experience in information systems support;
    • Five years of experience in information systems support may be substituted for the combined education and experience requirements
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • Three years of system administration and/or Information Technology technician experience handling both various types of application platforms and/or hardware devices
    • Experience in a large public safety environment where management of life-critical systems exists
    • Agile in a fast paced public safety environment
    • Experience supporting, planning and executing large scale system upgrades
    • Experience managing, administering, provisioning and/or supporting CradlePoint gateways or similar gateway devices such as Sierra Wireless gateways, etc
    • Proven experience to troubleshoot complex technical issues and familiarity with VOIP
    • Solid understanding of desktop operating systems, Microsoft Office 365 and other common desktop applications
    • Solid understanding of desktop computer hardware and peripherals
    • General understanding of networking including TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, etc
    • CompTIA/A+ and/or Network+ Certification preferred but not required
    • Preferred experience providing direction and training to users at various levels of expertise to increase their knowledge to utilize systems supported

    • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices to develop and maintain a high level of customer satisfaction delivered by the department
    • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment as well as being self-sufficient and possess a high level of internal drive and independence
    • Excellent skills documenting enhancements, changes and improvements to our systems
    • Knowledge and experience supporting both hosted and on-premise applications
    • Critical thinking skills to analyze and correlate data to deduce potential conclusions or aid in troubleshooting and excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Ability to plan and perform updates to hardware and software platforms and enhancements upgrades
    • Ability to develop reports and configure systems in a public safety setting and integrate third-party systems with current applications
